Jaguar Mute Spring

Hi all,

I'm new to this forum so hello!

I have an original '62 Jag but when I bought it it was minus the tremolo arm and mute.

I have managed to source an original '62 mute but this came without the mute cylinder and spring. I have bought a new cylinder from guitarresource.com but am still minus the spring. I have been quoted some silly prices and Fender do not seem to currently have them in stock.

I can pop down to my local electrical or car store and can buy a box of assorted springs but can anyone tell me what spring I need in terms of length/strength etc?

It would be a big help as it would mean I could finally get my guitar back up and running...

I installed a mute on my old CIJ Jaguar, i used a spring that was off a humbucker mounting plate. As long as it is strong enough and fits it does'nt really matter what size it is. You can cut the length down with some plier cutters.

Might pop along to Maplin then and see if they have any springs. I know I'd like to keep my Jag original but....

Hi,

Took the bridge off tonight in an attempt to fit the mute assembly and I made a few discoveries! 😡

Firstly, my initial thoughts about the mute plunger and spring were wrong. Having not had a mute system before I assumed that the cylinder sat at the bottom of the hole with the spring poking up and the bolt in the centre of the mute plate sat in the centre of the spring. Clearly the thing is the other way up....I also found that my guitar still had the original plunger and spring in the hole.

However, the cylinder on my guitar only seems to come halfway up the hole so that even with the bolt in the centre of the mute plate at its longest, it doesn't actually reach the top of the cylinder once the bridge ferrules and scratchplate are back in position.

I guess my question now is - should the top of the cylinder be at the top of the hole and not halfway down it like on mine and is the answer just to fit a longer bolt in the centre of the mute plate?

Any help appreciated and will get a photo up when I've put the thing back together!

As an extra note. I managed to get the old cylinder and spring out and found that the hole is about 1.5 inches deep which might explain why the cylinder only comes halfway up. It's a genuine '62 Jag so maybe the holes were this deep?

Thanks - that site is very informative!

I suspect the spring is broken on mine - certainly looks that way. How long are the springs supposed to be? If mine is broken that would explain it and I'm back hunting for a spring again!
