Is this a good amp to buy

just to let you guys know i tried out the mg series marshalls with multiple guitars and they are 🤮

anyways, I have been listening to Bucket-Head a lot lately and I just love his tone. I looked at his gear to see what amps he has and i saw that he used a peavey renown. would this be a good amp for me to get and use my new RAT distortion pedal through. I heard some songs recorded with it and i think it sounds really good........so what do you guys think...should i buy this?

I'm fairly sure Buckethead uses a Mesa triple rectifier actually, but I could be wrong. I'm afraid I don't know anything about the Peavey Renown though...

i would normally say that's a little to loud, But Because it's Solid state i dont think it matters.

Just because buckethead used it, don't mean its any good. It was probably one of many amps used in the studio at one time, not like his go to amp, like the mesa.

Also, Mad-Mike had some dodgy experiences with old peavey ss amps.

If you want that sort of tone, you might want to take a look at marshall haze amps or Blackstar HT-5

not really my area of expertise, but from my experience I agree with Foxy wattage doesn't matter nearly as much on SS amps

Lots of people really like the old solid state Peaveys. Great cleans and distortion too. Plenty of headroom as well. Go for it.

Take a look for Peavey Ultras too. They're tube. 3 channels. Decent cleans, with great crunch and lead channels.

The problem I have w/ ss amps using pedals is that SOME sound good but MOST sound can't get over the deadness of the ss amps tone.

I think you are better getting an inexpensive tube amp rather then a SS amp. You can get a good tube amp off most craiglist for right around $200-300. Even a little 5 watt amp w/ only a 8inch speaker is better for bedroom use in my opinion then a SS. Epi has some good ones, but there is always random amps popping up on CL here in Seattle for great deals.

The reason I think this way is that tone starts and ends w/ your fingers and a tube amp will teach you how to use your fingers better then a SS.

Again, just my opinion...but it's true 😆

But we aren't talking bass rigs here, we are talking standard guitar.

I agree that many SS bass rigs sound great and even ok w/ pedals but the overall tone of a bass rig is different than that of a guitar. Also your frequency range is completely different w/ bass rigs/pedals.
