The wood used on Jag-Stang and Mustang

so i have Mustang'69 RI (1997, i think) and Jag-Stang RI (2003),both are said to have a basswood used for their body,but...

1) although the body of my Mustang is more thin than the body of Jag-Stang, Mustang seem to be much heavier...WHY?

2)also,when i play on unplugged guitars, Mustang produces much more tone and vibe...WHY?

3)how much is this due to the strings?I have just bought a new Jag-Stang and haven't replaced the strings - they are D'Addario 009-046,i believe, but on my old Mustang i have GHS 010-052.

about weight , you didn't see nothen 😆 a vintage mustang are maded of mahogany lol , a studdent spinal broke

and weight on jag-stang is more largue it's compense weight and give impression is more light

but i wasn't talking about any vintage USA Mustangs,but about mine Japan Reissue,which is supposed to be made of basswood so as my Jag-Stang..

was i talked jag-stang is largue and it's balance them

jag-stang and mustang's shoud be maded on light Swamp ash

Swamp ash is heavy and is really only used if the guitar has a transparent finish, which nether the stang or JS have. Alder would suit them fine, hell even basswood does the trick.

I haven't noticed much of a difference to be honest, and certainly not that my Mustang is heavier than my Jag-Stang...

When talking about the weight of wood, you might as well ask how long is a piece of string. A tree that grows slowly has rings that are much closer together and is therefore more dense than a tree that grows quickly. It's the reason why yew that grew slowly in the mediterranean was prized for its bow-making qualities over yew that quickly in the forests of England.

To compare weights for different pieces of wood, you'd really have to compare the grain. But I guess you're not so interestd in getting an answer to your question that you'll strip the paint off both guitars just to see.

I'm not saying it's the sole reason one guitar weighs more than the other but it could be a factor. I imagine tha balance of each guitar might make them seem of different weight. Have you actually weighed them?

oh,i haven't,i just picked up the mustang with my right hand by the neck(so the balance of guitars should not matter),then i picked up the jag-stang and mustang seemed to be heavier. 😁

well the weight is actualy not that important,what i don't like is the fact,that Mustang (unplugged - so the pickups do not matter) has more tone and carries the sound much longer 😕

Both guitars should be basswood so it's surprising that your Mustang is heavier. Have you actually put them on a set of scales?

Some info:

there are differences in basswood between asian basswood and american basswood. The american version is lighter and less dense leading to a warmer overall tone, more balanced while the asian woods tend to be heavier and more dense, transmitting more highs. Of course there will be exceptions to every generality with respect to wood.

As with Mustang having more sustain than the Jagstang, it seems pretty common. It could be a number of things, including pickups and possibly body shape. BUT it also could come down to other factors like the craftmanship of each and as said before, the grain density of the wood.

You could cut two guitar bodies from the same tree, doesn't mean they'll be identical in weight. Wood varies - so does the weight - hope that helps?

I've noticed Basswood is ESPECIALLY inconsistant in heaviness.

I've had two basswood guitars. A cheap Schecter and a Squier 51.

The Schecter is about 10 pounds, the Squier about 5. (yes, I made sure the Schec actually WAS basswood... It weighs as much as a les paul for christ sake) I usually find that lighter guitars are better sounding/more resonant, but some people have the opposite experience. The Schecter sounds like ####, the Squier was actually ok.

Heavier guage strings always make the guitar more resonant. I have to use huge guage strings to make that schecter resonant at all.
