Presence controls are a tone control inside a negative feedback loop. What they do if basically control the dynamics of the treble control.
Resonance is this same idea, but controls the bass spectrum.
Some people describe presence controls as taking a blanket from off an amp. Very useful when you're playing with natural overdrive on a tube amp because it can really smooth out your tone.
