If what you are saying is it is a combination of all of the above , fingers soul equipment etc., that is the DNA of tone? I would now agree with that. I think I've changed my mind slightly.

Until 1970 his tone was clean...his thing with pedals came later in his career... Axis - Bold As Love was the first use of effects that were distortion based and even then mild in comparison to later stuff.

I think I pick a guitar based off of my mood rather than style I want to play. My Agile for when I feel like sitting and doing chords, my Jagstang when I feel rougher or agressive, my Patriot when I feel nestalgic. Those moods influence the sound or style I aim for. My guitars are more to help me set the mood.
