It is a "Blender Knob" that controls the balance between the neck and bridge pickups.It is really only useful if you have a stereo out and Rick-O-Sound box or a stereo TRS Y-cable to connect to 2 amps otherwise it is not very useful. according to John Hall:

It's an anachronism but if we removed it, the outcry would be heard around the world. But we certainly don't have to include it in newer models, just as we omitted it on the 200 and 650 series instruments "
