MIM Jag HH setup, dodgy advice given by local shop.

Hi all,

1st post after years of trolling J-S.com and wishing I could join in with discussions about MY Jag.. finally I now can! Im now a pround owner of a 2009 Fender Jaguar HH (MIM in case anyone cares).

Shes a real beaut! I've got some pics, but they're taken on my Blackberry and they just dont do the Jag justice..!!

I'll get some new ones on soon as I find the cable for the Digi camera!

Anyway, down to business. I need to get my Jag set up, and was about to book it in to my local shop (nationwide supplier!) but I happened to mention that I was getting (the usual) grub screw rattle and wondered whether they had any suggestions to sort it out? The guy just flatly said "buzz stop...... thats all you need, the Jag's bridges are ####e and that'll sort the buzz out".

Im not convinced to be honest, I cant see how adding a buzz stop will solve the grub screw rattle (which, im pleased to say, is the only errant noise I've had so far).

Anyone got any ideas as to whether he's just talking crap or this will actually sort the grub srews out? Or whether just getting the Jag set up properly (and sticking on some .11s) will resolve?

DO NOT PUT A BUZZ STOP ON IT!

can't remember where i read it... but you can't. Only on the Ris and the originals. Pretty sure there just isn't enough space for it. but you could give it a go... Probably was on the buzz stop website i read that it just doesnt work.

I have a Cp jazzy and my bridge buzzes a lot depending on what tuning im in and stuff, it seems to me that the bridge pieces (at work experience... bare with me..) where the strings sit on.. saddles? are what's buzzing on mine... doesnt affect playability nor is it picked up by the pickups and it usuallyu isnt there much anyway.

To actually answer your question: buzz stops increase the break angle and the tension of the strings which means that there is more pressure on the bridge (?) which stops any buzzing. If you have a CP (classic players) i juist wouldnt even try unless it was a real problem but you could always give it a go... your guitar... your money not mine. It would make a significant improvement if it was a MIJ/CIJ jag/jazzy so the tech is right in a way... Fran/Mad Mike are more in a position to talk about the whole grub screw thing...

I was sure that a buzz stop wouldnt actually achieve anything, other than wrecking my Jag. Not only that, I was wondering where the hell they were going to try and fit it!

Pretty worring to get such poor advice from a major guitar shop!!!

Im going to check with another tech, get them to set up the Jag properly, change strings and ask them about the grub screw issues. Im loathed to follow most of the advice out there, such as vaseline, trim them, or even loc-tite them like some nutters have!!

yeah if its a MIM one the buzz stop just wouldnt work. hope that clears it up for you..

Looks like a tune-o-matic bridge, what grub screws 😕

Do you mean the intonation screws?

I could tell you more with a closer picture to be honest but i'd say the buzzstop is'nt neccessary that's if one will even fit this model like Gilmour said. Avoid Loc-Tite too, i traded a second hand Jag not long ago off someone and the bridge is ruined with glue. I need to soak it in something to dissolve it.

What gauge strings are you using and what tuning?

Guitar shops have always been useless with Jaguars, their solution is either;

1/ Fit a Mustang bridge

2/ fit a buzzstop

Or even worse fit a TOM.

Cheers for reply mate. I did indeed mean intonation screws, for some reason I had grub screws on my mind when posting?!? I've semi resolved the issue with cutting a thin strip of cellotape and running it over the top of the intonation screws and securing just round the sides of the bridge, stopped a lot of the rattle, but not all.

I'm just using stock strings (Fender Super 250R Nickel Plated Steel, with gauges .010, .013, .017, .026, .036, .046) at the mo and standard tuning for the most part. Im going to get some skinny top/heavy bottoms and see how they get on.

Oh, and if you've still got piss loads of loctite around your intonation screws, Acetone will get it off. I've heard some places use heat to remove it, but to be honest, you need over 300 degrees F, and that kind a heat will mess up the Aluminium's natural structure.

Glad you solved it, personally i'd give vaseline or pritt stick a go on them screws, i know its messy and attracts dirt but a TOM style bridge really should'nt rattle bad unless the screw threads were milled out poorly. 10s should be fine too, thats what ive used on every Jag i've ever owned.

Hmmmmmmm.... Just been recommended that I change the current bridge for a Mustang one when I change the strings to heavy bottom when I take the to guitar to the tech for a set up?

I'd rather not have the expense to be honest, and if it wont make that much diffence, I'd rather just leave the current one in. Any ideas?
