Fran, yes, the JS was VERY inconsistant.. I happened to get a very nice reissue
Personally, I actually think the guitar looks bad ass! most call it ugly, but I truly love the way the angles look when its strapped on. was worried at first b/c of the slab body, but it was cut in such a way that the rib cut on a Mustang is pretty much in the same spot as the curve of the JS, so it doesn't bug me..
Love the neck!! its just perfect for my small hands!
BUT.. These things need CRAPLOADS of tweaking, set-up, and experimentation to get them to play comfortably across the board.. The inablility to adjust the height of each saddle has some strings higher than I want, but I can't do crap about it b/c some other strings are perfect height.. (-.-) not to mention the stock bridges tendancy to go off its intonation..
Also, don't know how it's possible, but I had a basswood Mustang and my JS seems HEAVIER for some reason despite not being much different in size 😕
And, of course, the stock pick-ups.. I actually like the strat neck pickup, and the bridge HB is decent, but definately doesn't sound great and needs to go...
So, for now, my JS is still all stock, but I want an orange drop cap 1st, a CUSTOM filed TOM bridge (not gonna lock the tailpeice, just gonna keep it tightened as I think the springs add a kewl character to the sound of the guitar), and (if the orange drop still doesn't make the HB to my liking) a new bridge HB... Possibly also a fender noiseless neck pickup or a slave coil on the existing neck pu...
So.. In summation.. the Jag-Stang looks cool, plays like #### out of the box, has GREAT potential, ISN'T for everyone, and, if it's reissued in the future, needs to be tweaked like the Classic Player Jaguar and Jazzmasters that Fender has out right now...
