Jag-Stang upgrading, opinions/wiring diagrams wanted

Hey all

I'm starting the upgrades on my Jag-stang this week and i wanted to get some opinions and additional ideas regarding this thing.

Mod Wish List:

1. White stock switches being swapped out for black

2. Volume/tone pots being swapped out for 500k pots

3. Volume pot will be push/pull switch

4. Black TB-5 Duncan Custom "trembucker" going into the bridge

5. Black SJBJ-1 Duncan JB Jr. going into the Neck

6. Orange Drop 0.22 going on to the tone

Wiring:

Switch 1: Pickup Selector (TB-5/Both/JB Jr)

Switch 2: Series/Split/Parallel

Push/Pull: Phase Selector

If there is enough space for another 3 way switch:

Switch 1: Series/Split/Parallel, JB Jr

Switch 2: Series/Split/Parallel, TB-5

Switch 3 (to be added): Pickup Selector (TB-5/Both/JB Jr)

Push/Pull: Phase Selector

I'm hoping i can get a good guide towards this wiring. I'm using iCEyByTES's wiring guide to start off

I'm also looking to add contours and blueburst it, sliver knobs, and possibly a tuner switch, but i don't yet know what tuners to get.

anything i'm missing here?

Im a bit confused, you should'nt need pull pots if switch 2 is coil splitting the humbucker and phase switching?

I put contours on my JS and i wished i had'nt now, the stock body seems more aesthetically right and it is'nt uncomfortable like some Tele's can be digging into your ribcage. Plus you will devalue the guitar a lot.

switch 2 is only handling series, parallel or split bridge humbucker. the pots are going to handle phase (in phase/out of phase).

the question i'm having about it is, with the pickups i've got going in, is it possible to do both out of phase independently, and if so, was i right to get both pots?

as for the contours, i'm pretty sure i want at least the one on the back. do you have pix of yours? i'd like to see.

I just realized....i don't have a true single coil. I believe that there isn't a way of doing a phase change unless i trade out the JB Junior for a single coil.

is this correct?

How come you want all this stuff anyway, what sort of music do you play?

I play a really really wide variety of stuff. Our little group pretty much does whatever they feel like....i'm focusing on metal, goth-industrial, and darker alternative (alice in chains, nightwish, to/die/for, rammstein/The 69 eyes/), but with this group we will play blues riffs one minute and jazzy sorta thing the next. We also do some weird ambient stuff some times.

Hell, we even cover Mazzy Star songs

I want as much tonal variety as i can possibly get while still having my main sound be the goth/industrial/metal. I considered a TB-6 Duncan Distortion, but i heard that they didn't clean up very well, i didn't want EMG active pickups, and i felt that the TB-4s probably wouldn't cut it for what i wanted, so i went the TB-5 custom for the bridge.

As for the neck, pickup, i haven't given it a lot of thought, but i do want to be able to do an out of phase sound with it. I didn't realize when i got the JB Jr that the out of phase sound may not be possible without a single coil

I found an article that shows the wiring, and it honestly makes a lot of sense. A ton of good wiring info here as well. Essentially, having an "out of phase" sound is only supposed to work when both pickups are on. I'm not entirely sure what kind of wiring was going on with my jag-stang a few years ago, but the sound i got out of it was possible with the single coil in the "out of phase" position, even if the humbucker was off. I was looking to recreate that sound (kinda hollow, sounds like the intro to Smells Like Teen Spirit, only a bit weaker without any effects at all.)

Phase Reversal Switch

For single coils OR humbuckers.

Another tone option for a guitarist is to put a pickup out of phase with another pickup, producing a thin "inside-out" squawky kind of sound. When 2 pickups are in phase, they work together and reinforce each other. When they are out of phase the 2 pickups are working against one another and the resulting sound is the "leftovers" from these cancellations. The closer the 2 pickups are, the greater the cancellations, the thinner the sound and the lesser the volume. Therefore, the neck and bridge pickups out of phase is the best choice for this type of sound.

In order to achieve this sound (and to go back to a regular sound), we use a phase reversal switch (see above diagram). (For an explanation of how this switch works, go to Basic Electricity and scroll down to the 'Double Pole Double Throw' section).

It is important to state that you do not have to use 2 phase switches because reversing the leads of both pickups would put them back in phase!!

Wiring the phase switch is fairly simple. Solder 2 wires in the criss-cross manner shown in the diagram. In the guitar cavity, unsolder the 2 bridge pickup leads; solder the phase switch "Out" leads to the exact same spot where the pickup leads were; solder the bridge pickup leads to the "From Pickup" terminals on the phase switch. Mount the switch, close up the guitar and start enjoying the new sound you just created!

You would like the old Westone Thunder 1A guitars, they had all this shiz on them. Nice guitars too. A nightmare to work on though, so yeah.. good luck with the wiring 😆

The out of phase stuff is good for funk guitar i find, gives a more vocal percussive sound. Series/parallel is useful for hum cancelling single coils, never really noticed any other application for it.

Ton answer your question, it doesn't matter whether the neck is single coil or not, you can only change the phase between 2 pickups (whether or not their humbucking). only 1 phase switch is needed, the other is redundant (just like the 2 phase switches on the original jag-stang).

I believe they are switchcraft switches. The local guitar shop is pretty awesome...the carry orange drops in stock, prices are very reasonable.

Hey all....wanted to know what people's opinions were on pickguard color on a dark metallic blue jag-stang. I have black pickups and switches, and was thinking either of going with a blue or black pearl or paisley

any thoughts?

Does anyone know where i could get hardware and a neck for a jag-stang?

also, as far as replacement bridges go, i know the go-to choice has been the Tune-o-matic, but does anyone know if it allows me to keep the Fender Vibrato tailpiece?

Try ebay for the neck and parts, and if you can't find a neck on ebay for whatever reason, try warmoth.

stuck in a holding pattern waiting for parts.

I also seem to need ideas for a new bridge. I keep hearing about the tune-o-matic, but i kinda like the flipped tailpiece....anyone have an upgraded bridge that still makes use of the flip?

I did the hardtail conversion like madmike's.

I kept the bridge because it is esentially a tune-o-matic. Putting in a new one is hard because the radius is different. I just wrapped the stock one with electrical tape to help keep it in place. A pick of mine is below.
