For the intro youl need an electro harmonix poly chorus
A Boss DS2 or similar distortion pedal,

And wat you do is
Turn Overdrive up to 9 oclock
Turn DS2 distortion full
Level all the way
Tone half way
For the polly chorus
Turn Width 10 oclock
Rate 10 - 11 oclock
Tune/Delay anywhere between 9 oclock and 12 oclock
Feedback 3 oclock
Switch the sweep filter OFF You should keep Poly Chorus on Chorus setting
USES AND SETTINGS:
BOSS-DS2 DISTORTION PEDAL: (secondary)
* { I've just recently switched to using the big muff as my primary "live" distortion}
BOSS-DS2 SETTINGS: FULL Level, FULL Distortion and set TONE to 11 o' Clock.
use the remote setting on setting 1 for ALL songs except the ones that you need a bit more feedback on (radio friendly etc.) The DS-2 is your MAIN distortion.
ELECTROHARMONIX BIG MUFF: (primary) * I use the vintage 70's style model. I prefer it to the newer smaller version, as did Kurt.
BIG MUFF SETTINGS: Same as above, except you set the TONE to 2 o' Clock. This is better as your main distortion on songs like Very Ape, as it has a nastier "raw" sound, and great sustain.
ELECTROHARMONIX STEREO POLYCHORUS SETTINGS:
Scentless Apprentice (for all parts everything except the main riff):
I use a combination of Big muff and DS-2 to get that over feedback sound.
The Poly settings: WIDTH 3 O CLOCK - RATE 3 O CLOCK - TUNE/DELAY JUST PASSED 12 O CLOCK Set the MODE switch to DOUBLE TRACK.
Heart Shaped Box (solo only):
The Poly settings: All the same as Scentless Apprentice except MODE switch which should be set to FLANGE.
Radio Friendly Unit Shifter: (I think you can guess what this sound is!!):
The Poly settings: WIDTH JUST PASSED 12 O CLOCK - RATE 5 O CLOCK - TUNE/DELAY 5 0 CLOCK - FEEDBACK JUST PASSED 12 O CLOCK - Set the MODE switch to Chorus.
In the studio the polychorus was used to create a sort of low frequency chorus tap on "Very ape" (not used on live version.)
It was also used on "The Priest They called Him", & a couple of others tracks.
ELECTROHARMONIX DELUXE MISTRESS:
I use this live for Radio Friendly Unit Shifter & for general Noize pollution at the end of the show. I just use the flanged output with the sweep switch set to normal. Just crank everything up full, I sometimes leave the Rate setting around 3 O CLOCK...but it varies with the size of the venue (reverb, acoustics, etc).
ELECTROHARMONIX SMALL CLONE [FULL CHORUS]: (for anything that needs that sweet watery tone, "come as you are", the break in "drain you"...anything with chorus really.)
SMALL CLONE SETTINGS: Keep your Depth set to UP...ALWAYS!. The ideal setting is between 10 and 11 o' Clock on the dial. For "Come as you are" set it back a little to between 9 and 10.
TIP: It's important to tweek the tone settings on your distortion pedals as your setting until you find the right balance. They should sound different apart, but not too different when applied together. Just so's it all sounds even when you play the 2 together.
USE ALOT OF MIDDLE AND ONLY 12 O CLOCK TREBLE ON YOUR AMP SETTINGS!
DIAL BACK ON THE PRESENCE AND REVERB, YOU DON'T NEED ALOT.
set your amp to sound CLEAN and then set the Middle to nearly full, and the Treble @ 12 O CLOCK or less. Around 3 O CLOCK on Presense or less again (varies with amps). Just a hint of Reverb, make it sound kinda close cased. Then from the Amp connect in your Big Muff, then Polychorus, Small Clone & DS-2. Set the pedals as I've explained and your done!
