poplar (or mahogany) was used in the 60's on mustangs. they never used basswood. basically, those '69's were never that faithful to the real '69's, which were compstangs anyway.
poplar is harder than basswood. but whether there's a great difference is sound, is usually a matter of peoples personal opinion
