I am planning on building a Jazzmaster this summer... can anyone tell me about the jazzmasters they have built with around a budget of 800?

You could do a Warmoth build for around that or you could make your own body and get parts if you want a more natural stained finish. From my experience building guitars from parts, it tends to run around $800 but you get a guitar pretty much exactly how you want it. I know Warmoth makes good stuff. Some people like Allparts, but I think they are Japan set vs AVRI styled. I had fun taking a Blacktop Jazzmaster and routing it to make it more like an AVRI. It only has cost around $500 and it now has AVRI trem, US electronics, AVRI pickguard, and roller parts in it. I sanded the headstock and picked up a old style Jazzmaster water decal to put on it. 😀

Here is my Blacktop modded. I routed the bridge pickup area to fit a Jazzmaster pickup, routed and added the rollers and rhythm/lead switch, upgraded the pots, added a second tone, a side jack, strangle switch by the new toggle, and an AVRI trem unit. I also refinished the headstock and put an early Jazzmaster decal on it. Cost was easily under $800.
