Odd Jag-Stang Pot Issue

I guess it isn't really an issue, just really odd. I took off my newer Jag-Stang's plate to look at a malfunctioning tone pot and saw this:

Itty bitty mini 250k pots. My older Jag-Stang had 250ks too, but the pots were normal sized. When I took off the tone pot to replace it I found none of my pots fit because the hole for the pot's shaft was too small. I ended up drilling them a bit wider to be able to take the other pots. It isn't a US vs MIJ thing either because the pots I put in were MIJ ones. Even my minipots wouldn't fit. It was the darndest thing. Anyone else see that? I am used to the three holes on the plate being about the same size. This one had TINY ones for the top two.

I haven't cracked mine open yet, but when I do I'll check to see what it has. I think I'm at least the third owner of it, so no telling whats in there.

I replaced the pots on my reissue JS, and it had the same mini 250k pots as yours. So I guess its only the newer 02-05's that have these? Mine now has CTS 250k's and a .022 cap. Massive difference with the stock pickups, it sounds much brighter. By the end of the week I'll have a new pickup in the bridge - GFS Mean 90.

Nice. I swapped mine with some pots from my 1985 Strat and it is much better. (The tone pot that was in there wasn't working so I figured I might as well put a new volume in there as well when I saw the mini pots.)

What cap are you going with? I'm still shocked at how much this mod woke up the stock pickups. Really changes the character of the guitar.

LOL Sadly I am not sure. It was whatever came stock on the 1985 MIJ strat I got the tone pot from. I just had the old ones in a plastic bin and decided to toss them in since the stock plastic knobs fit the posts. 😀 It does make a huge difference in sound though. A nice cheap mod vs. changing the stock pickups which I actually think sound ok.

Agreed about the stock pickups, I'm still going to try the P90, but I'm kinda digging this new setup.

Well, I had to abort the Mean 90 idea. It wouldn't fit in the stock pickguard, and I'm not willing to start hacking on the original one. Maybe later I'll get a custom pickguard and try it again. I'm using a .033 cap, which I think this is a much better setup than the stock .047 or the .022 that I had in there. I think I'm content for now. The CTS fullsize pots seem to make a difference too, though it may just be in my head. I went with black strat knobs as well.

I did find a use for the old mini 250k pots - they're in my Yamaha RBX200 bass since both of the stock ones where shot.
