Awesome layman information in here. I'm not new to guitar tech or building my own, but I'm new to Jags/Jazzmasters. I never knew before today they had different scale lengths.

The project guitar I'll be starting soon is very similar to yours, the OP's. Jazzmaster body with Jaguar hardware, only I'm keeping the BT Jazzmaster pickup config. It's good all this basic information is here in one thread.

Additional question, anyone can answer this, but -- it looks like you did some extra routing on the pickup holes and expanded them a bit.

Was it because the DiMarzio SDs/PAF pickups were larger and required some extra space? Or extra depth?

In this case depth is my biggest concern, as I am personally a big fan of the 'EVH' setup of mounting the pickup inside the wood and making it actually touch the wood. Your pickups look like they float a little on the mounting screws, and it's all personal preference in the end, just curious.

EDIT: Actually a better question to ask might be, is the humbucker on that Blacktop Jazzmaster physically smaller than a standard humbucker?

The routing was because the neck Jazzmaster pickup was not the correct depth for a humbucker. I cleaned up the lower routing to match since I wasn't mounting the bridge humbucker to wood, but the pickguard.

Mine do float on the pickguard like Strat pickups.

The superdistortion on my guitar is a normal sized one.

So I had that custom Jazzmaster I did to look like the Cobain Jaguar.

The person I traded her to wanted me to remake it in a more normal Jazzmaster style, so here she is now after rebuilding the cavities and some new parts. 😀 She has a Duncan designed pickup in the neck now and a GFS hot in the bridge. One meg volume and tone with an orange drop cap. Meat and potatos. 😀

Do the jaguar pickguard and the jazzmaster pickguard share the same wholes even with the metal pieces? Or did you have to redrill thw wholes when you went back ti the jazzmasrer pickguard?
