For some reason I have only just found these and 'The Stooge' fuzz pedal interests me as it is supposedly Super Fuzz copy, does anyone have any experience with this pedal? How close does it sound to the original SuperFuzz?
Gonna try to help you out here a bit if possible.
I have no idea exactly how close this sounds to the Superfuzz. Although you can judge yourself by checking this out as well:
I sense some subtle differences, but nothing mind-blowingly better or worse. 'The Stooge' actually has a pretty sweet tone to be honest with you. Both seem to have advantages and disadvantages, mainly that 'The Stooge' seems to also have some octave controls which would make it more than just a standard fuzz pedal. The downfall of the 'The Stooge' is pretty obvious: it's not the real deal so there is always going to be minor differences from a real Univox. Likewise, the positive of the Univox is that it is the real deal, the holy grail cream of the crop fuzz pedal. The downfall of the Univox is that it will run you about $500 dollars and that is minimum. Highly sought after pedal. I think that if you agree with me that the Valco has a badass tone, regardless of if its identical to the Superfuzz, then you should go for it. Here are some more suggestions though if you want my opinion of what I would get before the Valco.
There's a little company called Build Your Own Clone which you may or may not know about. Well they sell a kit to build an exact replica of the Univox Superfuzz, utilizing all of the same parts and components as the original beast. They call it the "Leeds Fuzz", which is very obvious a reference to The Who's album Live At Leeds where Townshend famously used the Univox Superfuzz. Check this out:
(First Pedal Demo'd)
That obviously sounds ridiculously close to the original Univox Superfuzz. They do come in kits to build yourself, but they also come pre-built from an authorized BYOC reseller. Here are some links, and good luck finding the right fuzz for you!
