Squier Mustang! (Vintage Modified Series)

I'm not sure if its a good idea. On the one hand they ARE supposed to be student models, which the squier brand offers, but on the other, could they cost more than their worth and possibly be the end of Mustangs and Jaguars? (by which I mean phasing out Japan and Mexican production i.e, the cheaper models)

As a person who's ALWAYS wanted a Mustang, I was happy when I heard, but still felt a bit let down since the Fender brand is running off and charging extortionate prices for what were supposed to be 'student models'

thats my view... If they would have made a LPB (with matching head and stripe) version, it would have been a different story, even if it turned out to be a P.O.S haha

i think its pretty awesome actually, it seems they wanted something a bit more contempary without changing too much, medium jumbo frets, 9.25 raduis, truss ross in the headstock, better style pick up's. im thinking this would be a better student model than a stock mustang these days.

i really dont see this being the end of the standard mustang at all, its just way too popular.

Well, the Japanese 'stangs are extortionate prices. Squier, though? That's $500 MSRP, which is bound to stay at $300 or less in-store price ($300 at Musician's Friend right now). That's pretty much right-on-target for a student model.

Wish I had known about these before I hacked apart my Japanese Mustang to mod it. I'd definitely have considered working on one of these first, for practice, before messing with the more expensive guitar.

Also, for $300 I'd absolutely consider looking at one of these. I'd want to play it in-store, make sure it's a decent, but as something to beat up or mess with alternate tunings? Oh yeah.

Typical left handed comment but after paying nearly $1000 for a Japanese left handed mustang I would LOVE to see a left handed squier for $300. I am seriously considering buying a righty and flipping it because I love my mustang so much.

What I have just noticed by looking at product pictures on Ishibashi s that the Squier Mustangs don't have body contours.

Correct. It is based off of the 65 I think and those didn't have contours. The 69 reissues have contours and metal tuners. The 65 has no contours and white plastic tuners. 😀

I wasn't sure what the deal was behind it. Personally, I'd prefer contours, but the lack of contours really doesn't affect my choice to purchase one.

I was lurking on Ishibashi the other day to see how much a competition 'Stang with matching headstock would cost. Around 800 or so USD so I figured I'd pick up on of these and get it refinished to suit my fancy.

Thanks, HNB, you're spot on. I have a 1965 Mustang, all original with the white plastic tuners, and it's so small & light that I don't notice the absence of body contour. I always prefer the contour on any guitar but on the Mustang it really doesn't make a big difference.
