The metal stuff is to sheild the p/up cavity. It's to stop interference, so you don't get weird noises from other signals, like radio's or tv's or whatever.

I also think you could probably just use kitchen foil. But even as I type that out I'm thinking it sounds a bit dubious.

You *could* buy the incredibly expensive aluminium or copper shielding with the sticky back from any guitar parts website OR you could pop down to Halfords and buy a 2" x 10 metre roll of the same stuff for peanuts.

I've never needed to turn a truss rod more than a turn and that was on a really bowed acoustic neck. If in doubt farm it out - you don't want to bugger it up any more.

someone said: put a cappo on the first fret. Then fret the string off at the last fret with your right hand. Take a look at the height of the low E string over the 8th fret itself. If the string is touching the fret, the neck is bowed towards the strings, and you will need to turn the truss rod anticlockwise for relief. The string should be sitting just above the fret (about 1mm or 2mm). If you feel the strings are bowed away from the neck too much, then you'll need to turn the truss rod screws clockwise. Neck has to be taken off to get to the screw. If you want to turn the truss rod screw in either direction, screw should be turned no more than 1/8-1/4 of the way around. Then put the neck back on and retune. Let the neck settle for a while before playing (the wood can somtimes take a day to work its way slowly). Further adjustments can be made if neccessary

can't you just take the aluminium panel off the old pickgaurd? or has it actually got that thin foil? it should be a fairly thick sheet of rigid aluminium, even on japanese jaguars

Japanese ones have the brass plate AND the aluminium coated scratchplate underside.

as for the truss rod, turn it a bit then wait a few days for it to set, then do it again. if it's had no effect then are you turning it the right way?
