Jag-Stang Project FINISHED Pg. 4

I picked up a Jag-Stang body. It is two piece alder with a swimming pool rout. It was made by TK Custom Guitars. I couldn't pass it up for the price I got it for second hand.

Body arrived. Looks nice. It has a US neck pocket vs Japanese one.

Jag-Stang pickguard won't work. The point on the lower horn sticks off the body.

Mustang one fits better, but needs a deeper curve.

It has contours, but not Fender ones. Much higher on the back and the front contour is way more subtile. 😀

Applied stain. It is looking good. Tonight I will lightly sand it and see if I want to do a second coat or if this is enough. I like it. 😀

It is minwax dark walnut. I wanted normal, but they didn't have it in stock. It will be darker than the Costello, but that is ok with me. 😀

I sanded the top lightly to take off some of the stain and show the wood and then did another coat to brown it back up.

I decided to do Z Poxy and Poly as a clear coat. I wanted the gold aspect that Z Poxy adds to the body color. Before I did it though, I checked parts and it all looks good. (Aside from the pickguard issue I mentioned.) Bridge holes line up fine.

Oh, here is the modified template I made for my pickguard. It is basically a Mustang guard with a steeper curve at the lower horn to match the Jag-Stang shape a bit better.

So happy accident/odd event happened as I sanded the Z Poxy flat. The Z Poxy caused the grain to rise. This caused some of the stain to sand off as I leveld the body creating a sort of zebra look to the guitar. At first I was a little pissed when it was one spot, but as I finished the front and back, I kind of dig it. Much more dramatic.

When damp, the contrast is more subtile so I am expecting it will not be as stark when clear coated.

I also dig the "zebra" effect it decided to take haha. I'm sure people would have varied opinions, but the unique factor of the stain is a fingerprint of a guitar finish; no one else will have that 😀

Pickups came from cooter. Neck mini humbucker and single coil bridge ala Pat's crackwhore jagup.

First coat of clear. I am very pleased with how the color is looking. Many more coats to go on over the week, but it should be set to start drying next week. 😀
