Heavy Distortion Pickup?

Anyone know a pickup that gets a good raunchy 1980's kinda shred distortion and Metal distortion not Nu-Metal like older Metallica trash style? Im thinkin bout gettin rid of the Seymour Duncan Livewire Metal it uses two 9 Volts for power and its just soo high output its sick! I wanna tone it down a little but still get a good cruncy metal tone like Randy Rhodes or George Lynch....Thanks!

I have one in my Cobain Jaguar and its really bitchin very 80's and Nevermind sounding part of the reason I think the album sounds so " slick " Im thinkin bout the Screamin Demon anybody know anything bout that?

The Super Distortion & Duncan Distortion are two different pickups. They both kick hard but in different kinds of ways.

my personal favs for distortion are hot rails and super distortion. All my guitars feature one of them.

The 'sreamin demon' was partly designed by/for George Lynch so that would be a good place to start, but as always consider the rest of your gear.

They're like higher output traditional PAF's, Randy Rhodes used a LP with standard PAF's in it on 'Blizzard of Oz' as far as i know.

Thanks for all the input im lookin into the Duncan Distortion and Screamin Demon also some other DiMarizio's I would get a Super Distortion but I have one already so I would hate for two guitars to have the same pups also it Needs to work with an Invader in the neck! Im gonna go to Guitar Center tommrow one of there workers is an old 80's shredder dude I'll talk to him about what he thinks will work best. Thanks everyone

Quite a few shredders go for EMG's, but i think theyre all active which means the hassle of where you gonna put the 9v battery.

You could always just stick anything in and get a big muff? That aside I get some pretty beefy and heavy distortion from my JB in my strat. Its really thick and clear though you'd need a pedal as well to get HEAVY heavy sounds out of it. And it is quite a one-of-a-kind sound, not for everyone. If it helps (and youve heard them) it gives me a pretty good and heavy nine black alps sound when I use it with a shredmaster or DS-2

Well the guy at Guitar Center said the Livewire is probley the best pick up for shred because it uses two nine volts which is why the output is soo much,So I guess for now I shall leave it untill I get pissed about the cost of 9 Volts and slam another Invader in the bridge or something.

Just get a high gain distortion pedal- you can kiss any clean tones goodbye using a pickup with TWO batteries involved.

Loads of 80s metal guys used standard passive pickups or just EMGs, so it's totally possible.

actually the clean is just boosted on my Superlead its just louder but very very clear! And the Invader is freakin awesome clean!

Screw that, you can shred with a single coil pup if you have a good amp or multi FX. (check yngwie malmsteen: DiMarzio HS-3 single coil).

Anyway the artists you have mentioned dont have the same sound. So go for an all-round decent pup, you really don't need an active one.

If you're considering the Livewire also consider the EMG 81. Depending on the amp you use I could see you being more than happy with that one. Also the Duncan Dimebucker has a good shred tone to it as well.

What kind of "shredding" do you plan on doing?

The " shredding " in question would be more of Metal solo's a-la-Marty Friedmen,Megadeth and Early Metallica style solo's. The amp I got is a Marshall 1959 Super Lead also known as a Plexi. I got it hooked up to a SKB pedal board with the effects going like this Vox Wah-EH Memory Man Delux-Boss OS-2-Ibanez Tubescreamer-Small Clone-Danelectro Flanger-Korg Digital Tuner. The OS-2 is where all the heaviness comes from I think its a great set up for the styles I play I dont need to swap things around to my band can do different songs easy.
