i think some of the confusion is how people are describing the switches - are you talking about them looking at the guitar from the front, or looking downwards when you're wearing the guitar??
Basically the switches being opposite shouldn't be out of phase, it should be humcancelling (if theyre 2 single coil anyway). It's all to do with the direction of winding ofg the pickups as well, and how theyve been wired.
spliting the humbucker turns off one of the coils, making it into a single coil.
Parallel means the 2 humbucker coils are wiring in a slightly different way, which gives hum cancelling but low output single coild sound.
Series if the regular way to wire a humbucker i.e. high output, hum cancelling.
These options will give my jag-stang a load of new sounds for very little effort.
