I'm going away soon and I'm considering either taking advantage of exchange rates, or just buying a guitar online.

BUT

What I want to know (from the small group who can help) is...

Are 1969 competition mustangs really worth the 2000+ price tag?

the real question is, "is it worth it to you?"

me personally, no. i would never pay more than 400 for any mustang. i might pay 500 for a good vintage mustang, but thats just so i could sell it for 2 grand.

Well to me, 2 grand for a reissue 69 Comp Stang is too much. Considering it's still the same "student" guitar with a different paint job....

That is my thought. You can find vintage ones for $2000. I got my US competition mustang with matching headstock for less than $2000.

Reissue? Nooo, VINTAGE 😉

I was just wondering if theyre worth their tag. Id love to own one, but it'd break my bank. Plus for the price of one I could probably get like 5 used mustang RIs..

How do they play and sound compared to newer ones?

They are very similar. I have two vintage competitions and one reissue.

I'm contemplating a red one currently on the guitar centre website, but I really want a blue. But the prices on ebay and stuff seem to be so different just because of the colour..

had any bad experiences buying vintage online? I guess you do it a lot

unless there are some really really good gut shots showing off each peice and some good close ups i don't buy vintage online, unless its from someone i know personally.

$2000 for a reissue? Where the hell are you? I got my 69 reissue imported to the States from Japan for only $900.

I would hope so, cuz holy ####, the most i've seen the 69 reissues go for is about 1200.

Although I was contemplating one of the Japanese RI's.. But I figured its worth waiting for the real deal 😀

when you said 69 compstang. that leads folks to believe its a re-issue since when they re-issued them they called them "69 re-issue" when in reality the compstang was made a couple years before that and after that.

Yep, infact some of the popular japanese reissues of the compstangs are the 73s. I'd like to get one, but it may just be cheaper to build one myself.

Yep, they have 69 compstangs as well, not as many colors, but they do exist.

Just did a quick look and looks like they aren't making them anymore, just the MG73. The beck ones were 69s in competition orange.

Yes, I agree with Robert. And also ya gotta engage the seller with questions. You get a feel for their character when they respond. Then, if you're feelin encouraged by the quality of the reply, arrange to talk by phone. Have a list of specific questions. Make sure there's a return option.

Then be prepared to evaluate the axe thoroughly when it arrives or take it to a trusted Luthier for inspection.

I've bought five good guitars and three amps off eBay and have been successful each time. Knock on wood... 😉
