Fret Wear

Yeah I've had my RI 69 mustang for about 8 months now, and I was wondering how long does it usually take to wear down a part of a fret.

Is 8 months normal for a non-gigging guitar's fret to wear down?

Or is it that i press too hard on the strings or something else?

i went into a store in austin and they said they redo SRV's frets every 12 months and you know how often he gigs so...no i wouldn't say 8 months is normal

do i need to worry about redoing my frets? I dont play gigs...just for fun...

you know when you see an old strat with a maple fret board?.....why does the fretboard start getting brownish-greyish spots?

because Maple fretboards have laquer on them and it discolors the reason the "69' RI" mustang was in that weird what. Also you dont need to worry about your frets for a while unless u play a whole lot you can tell if some notes dont play right or if the frets are indented. I need to get my 67' Stang re-fretted its got the originals in 😆

just play it bro.there is no set time frame for fret wear.the more you play the more they wear.some might wear quicker if you play in the same area all the time and bend alot.i own two vintage guitars and both have some visible wear but they play 100%.just my 2 cents.

some of it is grime and sweat, it happens with nitro. i get it on the elbow areas of my strat and les paul, and the backs of the necks on both guitars, that's always the worst place for it. the maple fingerboard on my AV strat gets discolouration on the higher frets sometimes. it cleans off like nothing. if left untreated it'll eat the lacquer and make it look like some seasoned old axeman has worn down to the bare neck wood with his righteous chops.

Yeah I hate having grime like where the arm is but the neck I dont mind the neck cause as stated you look like you really got some amazing chops ha.
