My list (in no particular order, as each one has their own different greatness):
- John Frusciante
- Hillel Slovak
- Omar A Rodriguez-Lopez
- Jimi Hendrix
- Johnny Greenwood
- Tom Morello
- Syd Barret
- David Gilmore
- Jimmy Page
- Duane Allman
- Chuck Berry
- Kirk Hammet
- Eric Clapton
I left Kurt off for a reason, he was a good composer but as for a "great" guitarist, no way. all the argument about he had a heart blah blah are useless. All the above guitarist put alot of heart into their playing and f people say the likes a Eric Clapton are stone cold music students, you are far off and havent listened to a wide range of guitarist. Listen to songs like "Tears in Heaven" and tell me that song doesnt have emotional playing in it 😉
I also added a few people on my list you might be surprised. Syd Barret and Hillel Slovak are rarely mentioned but their ideas HUGELY inspired others (Syd Barret invented the metal slide with his zippo and torched his guitar WAY before hendrix). Many of the greatest guitarist arent the shredders, they are just the clever ones.
