From your reports it seems the whole thing (pickup+ cover) is wax potted, but the cover can be removed if you're gentle (guitarpartresource do some nice black jag pickup covers)
however, i would be slightly worried about unpotting them and causing microphonic feedback if the covers are removed - milocj, have you had any microphonic squeel problems since?
