Twins are sick no doubt at all,but they lack that extra guts i can get out of mesa.

Apparently Buzzo used to use a Mesa rack setup live, but not anymore. Mainly JCM800s or solidstate Sunn Beta Lead.

And a RAT pedal. Distortion of champions 😁

Im thinking I may purchase a rat distortion soon the way doog keeps promoting it...

Think it could work as a lead pedal on occasion and is it good enough to record with?

and btw mesa's are fantastic, twins are great as well but also 100lbs... I like my back to much to purchase one.

I'd strongly advise checking one out with as similar a guitar and amp setup to your own as poss- they're definately not everyones cup of tea.

There's certainly a lot of gain available, but it's not a high gain "metal" sort of tone, more a thick natural highly overdriven amp tone with a fair bit of compression.

My only complaint with the RAT is the dials don't really do much from about 1 o'clock to all the way up. But there's plenty of awesome sounds in the first half of the dial anyways 😁

I'll get my friend to search for some used ones downtown, hopefully I find something.

I'm thinking of getting an EQ pedal for a volume booster as well, but the rat I'm thinking would give me a nice thick lead tone, more so then just boosting my mesa lead channel.

I'd go for the big muff but I find them kinda pricey, and If I were to buy a fuzz pedal I'd want something more along the lines of george harrison in "revolution" as opposed to a cream filled fuzz anyways.

things would be so much simpler If I just had money...

-> Fender Super Twin Reverb 1979 (EHX/Sovtek tubes).

-> Some Marshall JCM 4x12 cabinet, which belong to a friend of mine, just borrowing.

Enough of distortion and the 180W RMS amp is pretty much enough too... The amp looks just like this: http://www.ampwares.com/ffg/super_twin_reverb.html But I don't like the clean sound on the amp, dunno if the tubes are being/getting out of shape or is it just me, or the guitar.. 🙄

Just got a new addition to the rig...A japanese semi hollow body from the 60's, looks like a Univox.

It sounds pretty amazing, the bridge pickup has a tele twang to it and the neck pickup is really thick, perfect for jazz...

It was a deal too, 75 bucks!

In all honesty, not really. It's been a looong time since I've played on another RAT, but on mine (bought brand new), the dials have very little effect from the noon to max positions, like I said.

I made the Ruetz RAT mod switchable on my RAT2 so I can easily get a few different sounds (modded mode is a bit lower gain and better bass response than stock).

All said and done, it does a few sounds that I love a lot, it's gotta be one of the most thick and natural sounding distortion pedals I've ever used or owned, it's a perfect match for single coils and my Marshall.

"Try one one" would be my advice.

Ok cool thanks, I'll have a look next time I'm in town. I must admit, I don't mind if it's not a jack of all trades, I tend to play stuff like My Bloody Valentine, Pavement, Smashing Pumpkins and Melvins, so I guess it should be pretty well suited - that said I already have a Shredmaster and a Boss HM-2, which I think may cover similar ground. Ahh well you can never have too many pedals.

A NYC Big Muff Pi would be better suited to the "wall of fuzz" Pumpkins distorted sound, but a RAT would pull off Pavement and Melvins nicely, I think Spiral Stairs used one actually. They're not a mile apart, the Muff tends to have a more mid light sound, making it suit rhythm guitars nicely.

Yeah I've had vast experience with a Big Muff, I borrowed my friends for a few months, and I really like it, I may be getting one for my birthday next week. And I'll certainly investigate a Rat, the Ruetz Rat mod is interesting, it would be cool to put a dual concentric pot in where the filter control is, so you can control the mod externally.
