U060694 - Does it say Crafted in Japan or Made in Japan, and how thick is the lettering? You could be looking at a partscaster someone put together IE a Kurt Cobain Mustang with a Japanese 69' Reissue neck on it, or someone had the headstock painted on it, but I'd need to know the font of the serial and weather Made in Japan or Crafted in Japan.
If Made in Japan - that serial could be one of two years/dates - 1995-1996 is U in Made in Japan with thinner/lighter font - I know because that's what my Jag-Stang is (U023314). If the font is thicker, it could be a later date and therefore legitimate and someone may have repainted the headstock.
If Crafted in Japan then it's definitely a Parts-Stang. Fender Japan moved production from Fujigen Gakki in 1997 to Dyna Gakki - My Jaguar was made there. and then sometime in 2008-2010ish they changed either back to Fujigen or to another builder and changed the decals back to Made In Japan with a thicker font than the 80's/90's guitars had.
It could be your headstock was repainted by a skilled guitar tech/finishing person too. A common practice on Squier VM series stuff is to paint the headstock to match the body and slap a Fender Decal over it. I would not be surprised if some hardcore Kurt Cobain fan wanted to match Kurt's 69' compstang and had the headstock of their KC Mustang repainted to match it complete with appropriate Mustang decal. Either that or it could have been a custom order from Fender to have the headstock matched that way, I've heard of company's doing things like that.
To sum it all up, without pictures the guitar could be one of the following.....
- A legitimate Kurt Cobain mustang that left the factory with a matching headstock either by customer request as a one-off
- A legitimate Kurt Cobain Mustang with a 1995-1996 69' Mustang Competition Reissue neck on it
- A 1995-1996 Fender Mustang 69' Reissue modified into a Cobain Mustang
- A Legitimate Kurt Cobain Mustang from the earlier Japanese runs with the headstock painted and a replacement decal installed
It's hard to tell ithout pictures.....
