Is the 'buzz stop' a bad idea?

They work great, and as far as I know they won't damage anything. The only complaint I have about them is that they look weird.

the jag I just got yesterday has one, I'd never heard of them until someone told me what it was. If you want I can show you a picture of what it looks like on the guitar and take a picture of it off ?

It doesn't appear to do any damange.

They affect the use of the trem though don't they? that's the main reason I don't want one, plus my Jag's fine as it is, so I can shut up.

I don't see how it'd mess up the trem, as it's supposedly a "roller" buzz-stop (it looks like just a smooth bar to me, but I suppose it could roll). However, I don't own one, so I couldn't say.

would I be completely out of touch to say it really resembles the way a Bigsby works, more or less?

i got a crap sg copy with a crap bigsby trem copy on it. its the same principle really.

it would improve the tone too is what my music teacher tells me.

is there any point getting one installed on a jaguar with a mustang bridge though?

stang/jag bridge. Either will work fine with te buzzstop.

In theory, it'll improve sustain (some people say it might be pretty much a placebo effect), and it will definately cut down on chances of strings popping from a saddle groove (which isn't a problem if your bridge is properly set up), and it will also remove the chimey noises from the back of the bridge while playing (which is a good or bad thing, depending on personal taste).

My opinion is that it does improve sustain slightly.

The only problem regarding the bridge is that the increased string angle tends to push the bridge towards the pickups (because the bridge is intended to rock when you use the trem). You can get around this by taping the bridge posts but this in turn causes the strings to scrape across the saddles increasing the likelihood of tuning problems and/or breakages. For me the buzzstop is more suited to use with the Mustang saddles than the jaguar ones because they are smoother (no allen screw holes). I found I was getting regular broken strings with the Jag bridge. I use a bit of graphite on the saddles when I change strings to minimise friction and this does the job.

Okay, they look dorky. My main complaint about them is that some of the coolest sounds you can get from the jaguar and jazzer are from playing behind the bridge. The buzzstop nixes that, which is totally bogus.
