I've been trying to find a second guitar that is different to my Avri 52 Tele (family hand-down. Don't ask). I can't quite make up my mind to be honest and every day I think something else. I can't spend tons of money, but want a guitar that I love. Most of all, I want a fairly light-weight, not too massively big, short-scale guitar with a thin and narrow neck to give my small hands a chance of some faster playing.
Below are my thoughts...
Yes, I'd take a lovely Mustang if someone dropped one on my doorstep. But they tend to be quite a bit above my price range, too full on 'look at me' (race stripes, coloured headstock, or metallic colour), or look completely bland (latest models). So the only real option would be a Squier VM in red (not keen on the other colours). I would probably mod it.
Jaguar: love them, but they are too big for little me. Full Stop.
Jag-Stang: I might be the odd one out, but I love the shape. It's oddly female I think, which is rare with guitars. It's probably smaller and lighter than a Jag (still have to see them side by side) and has a smaller nut than the others. Not sure if the neck is even thinner than the SQ Mustang (anyone know?). Possibly a modding project, install different bridge pickup and a split push/pull thingy (never done that, mind). Red is a must for me. The guitar would fall within my budget with some searching and tough negotiation. Modding would have to come later. Btw, I don't care about Nirvana.
Jagmaster: I'd so buy a cheap 24" scale reissue for modding as they look absolutely cool. Have I mentioned that my taste is odd? But unfortunately they are Big and Heavy. Not quite what I'm looking for I think.
Music that I love: surf and 60s garage, sonic youth, Neubauten, old-school punk with rubbished guitars, jazz, The Ex, alternative kraut-brass section--sustain guitar bands, riot grrl bands. Plus French and German chansons, and African music with traditional string instruments.
Right. What are your thoughts on my thoughts? Which guitar would you chose if you were me and liked the music that I like and you had a RI Tele already? By the look of it the choice is basically between a SQ VM Mustang and a Jag-Stang. (would not mind offers, provided they're in Europe, btw). Thanks guys.
