You dont have to stop playing to turn on the distortion
BanditGuitarist1 but if you have a footswitch like on my old Marshall100HDFX had clean nd distortion. You can tweak the distortion to what you like the footswitch over to that distortion when u need it. But I always had distoriton pedals cause I could never get the distorted tone I wanted.
jellybelly Or you just want more tonal possibilities. I don't think any amp's OD channel can mimic a RAT or a Big muff, tube amps 2nd channel is ussually quite mellow in comparrison to the scope of a stomp box.

jellybelly lol yeah i didnt really think of that: at lower levels amps ODs are pretty tame but when you want to RRRRRAAAAWWWWKKKK just push it up against the wall and hump away (or turn it up). I see where you're coming from though, less is more does work in some situations but I know of very few artists that use both channels if the have a dual channel amp.

BRINGS IN A HUGE CAKE WITH A HOE INSIDE! WOOOOO LETS GET DRUNK!
BlackTie The one reason I decided to use distortion/overdrive effect boxes instead of the amp distortion was that there's a split second of nothingness when I'd switch between the clean/dirty channels. With the pedals, the change is immediate, no delay.
