Are Mustang pickup covers acoustically transparent?

By that I mean do they alter the sound of a pickup in any significant way as opposed to using the pickup without a cover? Any feedback on this is appreciated, as I have heard mixed reports on the subject.

That's what I thought. I took my Mustang in to a local Music Go Round to have a new pickup put in the bridge. I told the guy to just use the existing pickup cover that had been over my original stock pickup, but he said that it would make the guitar sound worse. I have a pretty decent bull#### radar, so I told them to just put it on anyway.

Seriously, a legitimate and knowledgeable guitar technician is worth his weight in gold nowadays.

yeah plastic shouldn't weaken a magnetic field...

Whether plastic dampens a field or not is irrelevant, we're talking about like 3mm of plastic here. I'm pretty sure your tone will be alright. 😉

i would have thought it will be much thinner than 3mm. possibly between 1 and 1.5mm

The only was to effectively shield a magnetic field is with soft iron wich will not become magnetized. Think of the sheilding aroung a TV tube. Plastic should not have an effect on the magnetic field.

actualy pickups spacers are maded from plastic

and ive maded that question to myself

and i do my custom pickup using mapple ,walnut or ebony at spacer and bone at pickup cover , sounds hard shape piece of bone to do pickup cover

It's just a myth with no human backing.

I imagine if we hooked a pickup up to the most advanced electrical testing machine the world has ever seen,the reading would be almost identical.

It never ceases to amaze me the amount of sh!t is out there about guitars,like a jag wont distort or single coils suck for metal...what bull sh!t.!

Red guitars are "brighter" sounding too! 😲 LoL

True,but will it sound good?No!

A vintage mustang pup sounds like sh!t if your playin Melvins,Slayer or Sepultura but then a SJAG3 sounds just as good as a super distortion.

But who in their right mind would want to wreck a vintage pups sound quality loaded with distortion hey!

People even go so far as to say you can't play metal on mustangs,well if thats true i must be deluded because my Mustang blows away half the metal bands with their floyd rose crud and so does my Jag,not that i play alot of metal these days but i used to play it flat out and I've always had jaguars and Jazzmasters.

I just tell people each style of pickup has its place in music but buy no means is metal restricted to high powered battery operated pickups like a lot of people falsely believe.

I think vintage pu's sound amazing with dist(not like metal though, as I don't do that kinda stuff).

so that is my opinion, k.

there is a difference between pickups covering in metal/chrome, and those without (hence why you can get Gibson SGs with covered or uncovered pickups)

Apparently metal ones sound a bit smoother, but you also lose some harmonics.

Plastic covered ones though...nope no difference.
