  1. Bit late to this but glad you're happy with the kit and that it all worked out alright in the end. Looks like you did a pretty solid job of the enclosure graphics too, nice work. Amusingly, the last time I saw anything to do with OLCircuits stuff was the Orange Peel kit of theirs that my ex ordered for me as a Christmas gift back in 2009. Sadly though it never got built, didn't even get taken out of the packaging. She still has it and I haven't spoken to her in over 2 years so by now I doubt it'll ever see the light of day.
  2. I'd suggest doing it the slow methodical way and going over every component with a multimeter to make sure they're all passing the right current level. Any problems will become apparent that way.
  3. Welcome to the forum. Cool that someone from Keeley has joined us. We seem to have a few "celebrity" members on here now when it comes to pedal builders, Aen from Dwarfcraft has an account and I'm pretty sure Devi Ever has as well. Haven't seen either of them post in years though.

  5. Not been on here in a while, started a new job and moved to the other end of the country so forums haven't been much of a priority. But, I recently got some new toys and saw my rig change shape a bit so I thought I'd share. Most of the old regulars (if you're all still here? I know a lot of people bailed on this forum since I was a regular) will remember my axes. Gibson SG Special Faded from 2002 (added momentary killswitch, Trapeze tailpiece, Bare Knuckle Riffraff bridge pickup and Lace Sensor Dually gold/gold neck pickup) and MIJ Fender Jaguar from 1993 (SD Antiquity neck pickup, Vintage Vibe JG-90 bridge pickup, Graphtech Stringsaver bridge saddles and AVRI Jaguar trem system). New amp. I sold the old '68 Selmer I'd had and bought an early 80s Hiwatt Lead 50 but that turned out to be crap so I got another Selmer! This one's an early 70s Treble 'N' Bass 50R SV, not sure of the year eactly but it's between '71 and '75. All point-to-point handwired. Preamp section's still got all the original Mullard and Brimar valves. It's an absolutely amazing amp, only issue with it is the reverb (hence there not being a footswitch connected) which I think has a grounding issue with the reverb tank itself somewhere need to do some surgery on it at some point bit it's not a big deal. The cab is a custom Zilla "Modern" 2x12 fitted with two Celestion Rock Driver Pro speakers at 80w each. Finally, the pedalboard: The board itself is a Diago Tourman. The pedals are, in order of connection: - Made By Mike Saltbooster+ (always switched on) - Digitech Whammy IV (kept in a true bypass loop) - Boss TU2 tuner - Dunlop Crybaby (modifications: true bypass, slight volume boost, "vocal" mod, Fasel inductor) - Sola Sound Tonebender (traded the Hiwatt in for this at Macari's, otherwise I would never, EVER spend £249 on a fuzz pedal, although it does sound incredible) - VOX Big Ben Overdrive (includes original '60s Mullard ecc83 valve) - T-Rex Bloody Mary distortion - EH Big Muff (The '78 op-amp version with tone bypass switch. Picked it up for £70 on eBay, evidentally the guy didn't know what he had. Been converted to true bypass) - Fender volume pedal - BYOC Phase Royal (built from a kit, very versatile) - Boss DD6 (mainly used for loops or reverse delays) - Catalinbread Montavillian Echo (digital emulator of old tube-driven tape echos. Used mainly for ambient Robert Fripp-esque delays) - Boss DD3 (standard hi-fi repeats) - EH Holiest Grail reverb Currently when I'm not at work I'm writing and recording demos for a new EP. Think Mogwai meets Mastodon, if you can imagine that. Will hopefully have a band together soon as well.
  6. Talk Boxes are fiddly. You have to connect it between the amplifier and the speaker, rather than between the guitar and the amplifier. So your signal chain will go: Guitar -> regular FX pedals -> amplifier -> talk box -> speaker. Then you also, obviously, need the tube from the talk box attached to your microphone (not electrically connected, just strapped up to it on the mic stand). Lots of people don't really like using talk boxes 'cause, well, something goes wrong and they can blow your whole rig up. And electrocute you. If you want some real talk box inspirado though, check out the song "Jambi" by Tool.
  7. Looks like you want a 6 lug mono socket to me. Wouldn't know about part numbers but any replacement socket fitting that description will work just fine. I replaced all of the jack sockets on my old Selmer, no chance of getting exactly the same parts given the age of the amp but the modern replacements worked a treat.
  8. The first thing I noticed was that you've screwed the cab together. Most cabinet builders would throw a fit if they saw that. My advice would be to look up some online guides or even buys some books/ go to a couple of classes on basic carpentry and joining, and learn how to put together dovetail joints. Dovetails maximise the contact surfaces between the pieces of wood with no need for screws so once you've got some glue between them and let it set, it might as well just be one big piece of wood once it's finished, which really, REALLY helps in terms of resonance. Think about it, the best guitar bodies are made of as few pieces of wood as possible, bonded together as effectively as possible, and the same is true of a speaker cabinet; you wouldn't want a guitar with one half of the body screwed to the other. Plus generally it's just a lot stronger than pretty much any other way of joining two pieces of wood at a 90º angle. The other advantage to dovetails is the presentation, 'cause there isn't an obvious gap in the joint, and like I say there's no screws which makes it much easier to round off your corners and things like that. Other than that the design in terms of the actual shape of the thing is pretty quirky and could be interesting. Looks like a big old ported cab with that kind of depth to it so you would have a lot of bass, but then with an open back you'll lose a lot of that while probably gaining a lot of volume. If you're after building a quieter cab for home practise I would've gone with a closed back myself. Or you could always make yourself a removable back panel and have it both ways. Good luck with the rest of the build anyways.
  9. I'm surprised there aren't more responses to this thread, that's a fvcking solid custom job if ever I did see one. Really tidy looking. Would be interested to hear sound clips with the wide ranges if possible. Also just out of curiosity, what was the humbucker the previous owner put in it? Bit strange looking with a screw in each corner of the pickup cover, and the cover looks a bit oversized.
  10. Mate, that's a Wide Range humbucker at a funny angle so the chrome looks the same colour as the pickguard. Also I imagine a 6-string guitar with a bass pickup that only has 4 pole-pieces would sound gash. Think about it, it'd be muddier than a scat orgy at Glastonbury.
  11. Well, in that regard I wouldn't know, I've only ever had an amp that uses EL34s. My experience trying different EL34 brands though (insofar I've been through some original Mullards, JJs, Electro Harmonix, Mesa Boogie and Groove Tubes, with the Groove Tubes being my overall favourite) is that while one might have more power or high end clarity or tighter bass or whatever else than the rest, they all generally have the same overall feel and characteristics, so I might've assumed the same would be the case of 6L6s.
  12. It's not that they don't sound similar, although they don't, 6L6s are much more "glassy" and clear in the high end whereas EL34s etc tend to be warmer and more midrangey. But the problem is that they're not compatible in terms of the circuit. 6L6 is a beam tetrode tube and EL34 is a power pentode tube. They're not interchangeable, and if you tried you would do very serious damage to your amp.
  13. Depends entirely on what you consider to sound "bad". But generally no, people stack up gain pedals all the time. You'd probably get the best results going guitar -> distortion -> overdrive -> amp. Having that much gain will get noisy though.
