1966 Fender Showman (New Cab)

Recommended Posts

MY FIRST BLACKFACE AMP! I am very excited about this one. I need a new tube for it because one broke during shipping. Probably just as well. I should let it adjust to the temperature and humidity here anyways. I plan to bring it to Solderhaus in Seattle to have the caps checked to make sure they are still a-ok. I will likely have a grounded power cable added for safety. :) I can't wait to hear how it sounds. It was described to me as a Twin without reverb. I love my Twin, so I have good feelings about this one.

Crappy camera video demo through my homemade cabinet. I mostly wanted to make sure it worked. Sounds pretty good actually. I can't wait to try it through my better cabinet.

My space right now is pretty cramped also, but it should open up once my roommate moves out. :)

Isn't the Showman like 85-100 watts? With the volume around 6 on my Classic 30, I still clip the mic in my ipod. Are you running on seriously low output tube, or half the tubes? Because at 6 on an 85-100 watt amp, pictures should be falling, kids should be seeking cover, and neigbors should be at that second "1" already.

It is 85 watts. It is a 4ohm transformer in mine and I am running it through an 8ohm speaker so it makes it run with less power. ;)

It is in Jeff's hands now at Velvatone. I am totally impressed with his knowledge. He knew exactly what my concerns would be and gave me a lot of options to choose from to help my budget and to fit what I was looking for. He also guarentees his work so I can bring it in if there is a problem. He also said if I needed tubes and got them from him, he would install them and bias them for just the cost of the tubes. He is replacing the caps on the underside by the transformer. They were bubbles a bit and a little scorched looking. Putting in some Atoms there. He is also replacing the caps on the tube sockets and the power relating ones. He will check the caps that impact sound and tone, but only replace them if there is an issue. He said that these are the sound of the amp, so he only messes with them if it is needed. He is also installing some matches power tubes and testing my other tubes, adding a new three prong power cable, new pilot light, and also cleaning it and cleaning all contact points. He said he will also check and clean the pots as needed as well.

I am thrilled to have him work on it. His shop is FULL of old amps and cabinets. He worked for Boeing as an electrician and has NASA training on soldering and electronic work.

I can't wait to get it back. He said with the work he is doing, this fine amp should be good for the rest of my life. (Aside from tube replacements.)

you sir, have a fantastic amplifier!

i love the old fender cleans, and the showman is a classic in its own right! you can't beat em! and the price on those(really the silverfaced stuff) is still good! even at 1200.00 is great considering a new amp that mimics that sound is the same price.

Should be done this coming week. I can't wait. I am having Marty at Lamar speaker cabs build me a 1x15 cab for it with a Jensen MOD 15-120 speaker. Black tolex, gold cloth, closed back, birch ply... Should be really nice. He even asked me to send pictures of the head so he could try to match cloth color as best as he could and tolex. Nice guy to talk to. Like the pic below, but gold cloth, not silver.

The cab is smaller than a normal Showman cab, but the head will still sit on it nicely and that should make it a little lighter to carry around.

that bassman combo thing is AMZING@!

i still have most of my 77 bassman ten, i want to make a sort of hot rod deluxe style open back cab for it, and that cherry stain with the hemp looking cover is fantastic looking! i may try and do something like that for it!

We have a matching additional cabinet in the studio also. It was all built by same guy. He passed away but i'd be happy to get any dimensions or additional pics if you would like.

All finished! I got a vintage red jewel from him, but he also had a small amount of lemon colored ones. He said they are discontinued and kind of hard to find. They look gold with the light on. I like it a lot.

Cabinet came! It is awesome! (Aside from the metal corners that came black instead of chrome. I am sure Marty will send me some to swap.) Sounds great too. Once kiddos aren't napping, I will do a demo. VERY nice and warm. Tremolo is nice as well. I have wash cloths between the head and cabinet because the handle on the cab is taller than the head's feet. I will need to find a better way to lift the head up a little. Coasters or something?
