1968 Competition Red Mustang

After a brief amount of trauma over a blue competition Mustang I had paid for and was refunded (hopefully the seller reconsiders because I still would like it) I found this lovely guitar.

It is a 1968 serial number Competition Red Fender Mustang. Neck date is January 15, 1969. I am pretty sure this is one of the early ones because it still has Kluson tuners instead of the 70's "F" tuners. It also came with an original case and tremolo arm. Just missing a bridge cover as far as I can tell. (The seller is putting the original knobs on and taking the speed knobs off.) Here are the listing pictures. I have a tracking number so this should be a good deal.

Loads of pictures as promised. It does indeed say 15JAN66B in the pocket for what it is worth. It had a massive shim that I removed. I took some pictures of the guts. Pickups are stamped 6 6 6 so I have been calling it the devil. It is need to see shielding nailed in with a small finish nail. It is stamped 109 on the body under the guard. The switches needed some contact cleaner and work great now. Vintage bodies feel thin compared to the Japanese reissue. Normal I am guessing? The Kluson Deluxe tuners look stock. I see no signs they were changed. The neck is in fantastic shape. It even has a slight flame to it. Pickups sound nice and clear. I like having both on. There is a ground wire running from the control plate to the tremolo plate. Kind of cool. I took pics of the tremolo unit and bridge. The case is pretty small compared to my other cases. No compartment inside. Just space for the guitar so I wrapped the tremolo arm in a cloth to keep it from banging around in there. The lettering on the decal look kind of pink. (White over the red.) Loads of cool stuff. Here are the massive pictures!

Got out Red and Blue and did a side by side and sound check. It was really interesting actually.

Visually similar. The pickguard on Blue (Japanese) is slightly different.

Japanese contours are more defined and hard edged. The American (Red) is more gradual.

Japanese one has Klusons similar to Red.

Red (American) IS slightly thinner but the overall weight was actually closer than I remembered. They feel about the same weight to me even with Red having a slightly slimmer body.

Japanese has black side dots under the rosewood. American has white side dots on the line.

Japanese bridge screws go all the way to the other lip. No Pat. info.

American ones stop about 1/8 of an inch. Tremolo has Pat. info.

Japanese has no gap between the control plate and the pickguard.

American has a gap.

Sound wise they are actually very similar. I was impressed how close they were really. The headstock decals don't match. Japanese one has Black Fender with a larger and longer "Mustang" part as well as the Offset part. The American is white with more Pat. info under it. No Offset part and a smaller thinner "Mustang" text.

Fun comparison. The necks feel almost the same in shape. I was really surprised by this. The Japanese one holds well and was a very good rendition of the real deal. There are some differences of course, but they are very similar.

New competition family photo. I thought I should get some pictures of all three of my competitions together. (1968 US Competition Red, 1969 US Competition Blue, and my '69 Reissue Japanese Competition Ocean Turquoise Metallic.)

A little red vs blue. I did a demo of my '69 and my Japanese reissue. They sound very similar. After the demo, I raised the pickups in the reissue a bit and it sounds even closer. Slightly different, but very close. You can be the judge though.

Wow!!!  Those vintage comp stangs are stunning!

Thanks for sharing all the photos and video demo.  They do sound very similar but something just slightly different - maybe bit more definition in the vintage? Figure those old pickups have less and/or looser windings.

A fine trio on Mustangs.

Have you changed the bridge pickup in the vintage blue?

I have been eyeing up a new Fender Japan Mustang '73 reissue Competition in Ocean Turquoise Metallic. The guitar in this colour is not listed on the Fender Japan site.

The Fender Japan Mustang '73 reissue Competition and your '69 reissue look identical. Did you by the '69 reissue direct from Japan?
