Title: 1994 Fender Jagstang Left-Handed Sonic Blue – Mint, First-Run Factory Sample, S034773, Kurt Cobain Design
For sale is an exceptionally rare 1994 Fender left-handed Jagstang in Sonic Blue, serial number S034773, in pristine mint condition. This guitar is a first-run factory sample from Fender Japan’s FujiGen factory, produced before the official 1996 Jagstang release. Acquired during my time working at Fender, this guitar is a piece of music history, designed by Kurt Cobain of Nirvana and crafted during the early development phase of this iconic model. Key Features:
- Model: Fender Jagstang, Left-Handed, Sonic Blue
- Year: 1994 (pre-production factory sample, “S” serial prefix)
- Serial Number: S034773 (verified Made in Japan, 1993–1994)
- Condition: Mint – no modifications; fully original, rarely, and meticulously stored
- Specs: Alder body, maple neck, rosewood fretboard, 24” scale, original single-coil (neck) and humbucker (bridge), vintage-style tremolo, Kurt Cobain-designed controls
- Accessories: Fender Gig Bag included (priced accordingly)
This guitar is a collector’s dream, combining left-handed rarity, pristine condition, and a unique 1994 pre-production origin tied to the Kurt Cobain legacy. The “S” serial number confirms its early Made in Japan production, making it one of the first Jagstangs ever made. Perfect for Nirvana fans, Fender collectors, or players seeking a flawless example of this hybrid Mustang/Jaguar design.
Condition Details: Absolutely mint, with no wear, fading, or play marks. All electronics, hardware, and finish are 100% original and untouched, stored in a climate-controlled environment. Photos show its stunning Sonic Blue finish and flawless condition (additional high-res images available upon request). Why This Jagstang?:
- Rare 1994 factory sample, predating the 1996 production run
- Left-handed model, extremely scarce
- Mint condition, ideal for collectors or display
- Direct Fender provenance from my time at the company
- Kurt Cobain’s iconic design, blending Mustang and Jaguar features
A few things jump out on this jag-stang. Firstly the serial number of MIJ with leading ‘S’ character. As we’ve seen in the Registry the oldest jag-stangs from the “standard” production started with “T” serial, which would have a later production year.

The neck is stamped MG-69L which would be the Reissue Mustang (commonly referred to as MG69 mustang) in production by Fender Japan during the time. The japanese writing refers to JT95 which is the model stamp we are familiar with on full production jag-stangs. It wouldn’t be a surprise that the jag-stang production neck is based on the reissue mustang neck.

An oddity: The listing said the body is alder. However the first full production of the jag-stang was in basswood. Production shifted back to alder during reissue runs.
