Oh yeah - i know the D shaped shafts - they only allow the knob on in one direction - and it's usually the wrong one!

i'm thinking of getting one of those Peterson strobe footpedal tuners just to get my tuning and intonation a bit more spot on - but as we have found out (i hope) even perfectly intoned guitars are out of tune.

My point with perfect pitch was that what we call perfect pitch is actually wrong, because the western 12-tone system is a bodge - would someone with perfect western pitch know what to do with an Indian Raga for instance? Also the reference pitch A440 has steadily crept up over the centuries (i think it has been as low as A418), so Mozart's idea of perfect pitch would be different to a modern perfect pitcher.

I'd imagine 440 is more likely to stay put now though as we have electronic tuning devices which weren't around in the older days where it probably varied from concert to concert. Certainly an interesting point though.

As for indian music, I always thaught that fitted into a 12 tone system similar to ours? There you go, learn something new every day. I know Nepali music does, it kinda sounds quite similar to Celtic music, it's interesting (talking about classical and folk music now, not modern pop, god I hate Asian pop, it's almost worse than europop!).

Well i am a bit of a Bach fan and i have to hear it on authentic instruments - which also means they're tuned down quite a bit. If anyone thinks authentic instruments makes no difference just compare a recording made with a modern orchestra - even Beethoven sounds different - the authentic stuff sounds a lot rawer as the instruments are a lot less sophisticated - it's almost like punk-Bach.

They have a 12-tone system but it's different to 'ours' - i think they sometimes try and compromise their system to fit western music which is a shame. This is quite a good introduction to the whole thing. i think further compromises have been made since the introduction of the harmonium to Indian music (obviously using a 12-tone keyboard - don't know if they retune it). i think certain Ragas are now pretty much dropped because they don't fit into the harmonium accompaniment.

i put a series/parralel switch in place of the rythym switch-sounds great

edit: Know that you'll have to do a regrounding mod for whichever "ground wire" is being taken from ground... or you could just go all punk rock like I am and put some tape over it 😁

I am not at all an expert on this, but in Indian Sitar music, the octave is divided into 22 intervals

From the article i posted a link to:

"In some ragas, some notes may be flattened or sharpened by one shruti, in order to better suit the mood and effect of that raga. So, for tuning purposes, the octave is divided into 22 shrutis. This is only for tuning, however; for any given that or raga, only twelve specifically-tuned notes are available. The 22 shrutis each have a specific designation, and the intervals between them are not equal; the frequency ratios between adjacent shrutis ranges from about 1.01 to about 1.04."

So it's still a sort-of twelve note system. Still awaiting time to get round to doing the mods - although i do have proper Jag knobs no and need a three-ply scratchboard - definitely think i'll do a parallel/series on the cut switch.

So what you're saying is that it's a twelve-tone system where certain notes are slightly sharped or flattened? if so, i do that all the time, just not on purpose 😁

and when you do that series/parallel mod make sure you do a desoldering mod if those pickups dont come with 5 leads... if they only have two, do this: http://www.deaf-eddie.net/drawings/unground.doc when i do mine i might not bother regrounding it, because i never touch the pickup covers by themselves, so...

anyway, if you don't do that mod, you will have to:

a) deal with the noise when you touch the cover of the pickup whose ground is hot

😎 tape/cover the pickup

c) not play the guitar anymore

My favorite is B, but ill do the mod soon
