that's like saying that you could fret a string off at the first fret, play it, let it sustain, and at the same time loosen off the tuner, and you would notice no difference in sustain (let alone pitch!)

It's not like that at all.

I'm saying that with strings at equal tension but differing over the nut angles there is no difference in the width of oscillations of the string. That seems pretty basic to me. Sustain will change, obviously, but the width of oscillation won't.

erm, yes that's right. but we're not talking about locking nuts here. we're talking about nuts that require the strings to be angled off them here. if you had a locking nut, it wouldn't matter about the angle of the string past the nut. but it does with normal "cut off" nuts. they need string tension behind the nut. from nut to tuner

try tuning an E string at drop D. then see how well it sustains. also, note how the oscillation becomes wider, with more fretbuzz

The string angle over the nut won't change the width of the oscillations though.

I'll admit that I'm wrong over the relationship between tension and width of oscialltion though.

I agree with Johnnie and Donk.

I agree that improving the angle at the nut or bridge will improve sustain but I don't see how it would help fret buzz as the string tension and therefore width of oscillation would be the same.

i dunno, if it doesn't change the width, it'll change the slackness, or something. it's all negligible stuff, what we've been talking abouth here, anyway prolly. but anyway, arguments make for progress
