My path to a Jaguar or Jazzmaster from scratch

i have always wanted to be a part of this world, but at 17 a man in a shop talked me out of it and hard-sold me into the ultra-stable world of the Telecaster. Then recently I visited Les Paul world. I am happy in all these locations. They all have their rightful charms. But I always intended to reach the disputed territory of JazzmasterJaguarville.

Where do I start?

Most importantly, are the new USA ones any cop? why are they so #### expensive, what are the old japs/newer japs like, are there any good copies, what does it cost in mods to make a cheap copy worthwhile etc.

Someone told me the new Japs are better and more stable than the origibal USA ones. what about seymour duncan replacement pickups?

I currently use a tele with a quarter pounder and a hot rails replacement pickup.

and an Epi les paul with a SD humbucker in the neck.

BTW I am in the UK and I am in a band called Gravenhurst.

Because they're the best instruments Fender makes other than the custom shop. The AV Jazzy is tops as far as I'm concerned.

Read some of the other threads.

Then someone is retarded. It's not surprising for a brand new instrument to be more "stable" than a 60 year old one, is it? Doesn't mean it plays or sounds better.

They sound great.

The AV ones are really nice. Well worth the money.

You could also custom build one with parts from Warmoth and it would actually wind up being cheaper than an AV one, but still a little bit more expensive than importing one from japan.

First of all, you are looking into Jaz/Japs....because Kevin, SY and Kurt played them? First of all, you should know something first:

Kevin used those guitars on Loveless...and even he had a hard time getting that sound when playing gigs.

SY modded the crap out of their guitars.

Kurt modded all his guitars as well.

If you already knew this, apologies...but, if not, I'd hate for you to spend that much on a guitar and get completely dissappointed...

Had a look at your website and was very impressed, liked the video in particular. Are you signed to Warp? I am completely envious if that is the case!

As for the Jazz/Jag, I would say get either, but not one of those HH ones, nasty little things.

Well, a jag HH would be sort of sonic youthy, they humbuckify loads of guitars. I want one of those Jags. BUt I got a JM first.

Also, I think a normal Jaguar will sound a lot like a tele. The Jazzmaster will be a nice compliment to it.

I have a '71 Jag--all stock except for the bridge--& a '90 US Tele & they sound very different, unless the fuzz pedals are cranked...'coz as Johnny Ramone once said "all guitars start to sound the same when you play them loud enough"

If you've ever heard MBV live, I don't think Kevin had much trouble getting an awesome live sound, though not the same as in the studio. When in doubt, play hard & deafeningly loud. Central to the classic Sheilds guitar sound is the use/abuse of Jag/Jazz trem--you simply can't play a Strat the way he does a Jag/Jazz...a Bigsby comes close, but you can't really manipulate it while strumming like he does.

Methinks humbuckers were a big part of the Cobain sound--besides a vintage Mustang or 2, seems like everything he played & or broke had 'buckers...

Interesting to see Tim Gane mentioned as a guitar influence--his rhythm work is the backbone of the groop--even if he is usually buried in the mix.

I saw one of their 1st US shows & I can still picture him, 'burst vintage Jag in hand, turning his head from side to side, while I basked in a torrent of Farfisa overtones...good times.

yeah but that's just lee and his obsession with tele deluxe hums. thurston jazzies usually retain the jazz pickups.
