true, but to be honest, for the price range its not even really worth thinking about tube. I would (and have done) go for the Vox Valvetronix range. my 30w is more than loud enough for practices, and is mic-ed at shows. you could go for a lower end valve amp, but if you want a wide range of sounds which you can customise without having to get a marshall, go for the vox.
Some people think they aren't worth it, but most of these people just heard somebody playing a wonky version of smoke on the water in a crumby guitar shop with messed up settings.
I was in exactly the same situation a while back where I needed to replace my fender amp, but had limited funds, I went for the valvetronix 30w and its still geting played today, after being played up and down the country in varying sized venues.
