what are your favorites? i am looking at the ehx english muffin, seymour duncan twin tubes, zvex Box of rock... what are your thoughts?

i honestly only use the ds-2. it sounds way way way better than the ds-1. its much more full sounding

I look for transparency in an Overdrive pedal, something that lets your guitar keep its character.

Ibanez Tubescreamers are decent but people complain of a midrange 'hump', the Digitech Bad Monkey is okay as is the Boss SD-1. Marshall offer some good pedals with the BB2 and 'Guvnor'.

However, my favourate is the Dod YJM308, which is basically Malmsteens signature Dod 250 preamp/overdrive. It goes from crunch to ballsy distortion.

i have an mg10 the overdrive is okay, but not at all what im looking for. actually the overdrive is as good, if not better than my peavy valveking, although that amp is despised for its distortion

The electro-harmonix Germanium Overdrive has been on my top 5 list since I first heard it. You can mess with the voltage to the transisters to get that dying battery fuzz tone, or you can get a very transparent, sparkly type tone by increasing voltage and setting the gain on a 2-3 o'clock postition. check it out on www.EHX.com

The main thing I've found for good overdrive is to use the level knob more than the drive knob on whatever pedal your using, and crank your amp as loud as you can without pissing off your neighbors. My main overdrive sound I use for solos is a Keeley compressor with the sustain and level knobs maxed running into a Tubescreamer set with level maxed and drive set just below 12. The extra sustain with the tone of the tubescreamer gives you the coolest drive sound, you get a really thick bluesy sound with notes that sustain and sing like an old southern gospel singer. Anyone looking for super transparent overdrives should really look into the crowther hotcakes or the keeley modded bd 2s. On both these pedals if you turn the drive all the way down and click them on there is absolutely no change whatsoever in your guitar tone, they just add drive to your tone, nothing else.

ok ive settled on either a lava box or a tonebone tube classic. lava box is 100, tonebonde is 200 but has allot more options and sounds EXACTLY like a tube amp overdrive. lava box has got a great bassy tone without getting muddy. here are the videos, tell me what you think:

I liked the way the blues pro sounded out of the videos you posted, I may look into one of those myself. It doesn't seem to affect the guitars natural tone quite as much as the others do, and its very simple.

But of the above two pedals the radial tube distortion I think had the better tone, the lava box was a little too "buzzy" in my opinion and colored the tone in an unpleasant way, at least for what I like to hear, but thats very subjective.

Thanks for posting the vids though, now you've got my curiosity perked for drive pedals again and thought I finally closed the book on that subject for my playing.

yea, the lava box is really a bass heavy monster, thats what i like about it. doesnt sound too bad for chords, but id like to hear how it would sound with rumble on 6 gain maxed for solos high up on the neck, that would be a BIG sound.

Yea, i'm in the market for a fuzz right now, thinking fuzz factory, for lead sounds. my amp's clean channel cranks up and sounds great overdriven, so i think ill get an overdrive after a fuzz,delay, and maybe phaser. I'm thinking about doing kits to save money.

What od's are you using now?

for overdrive i use my Oranges channel or a use a TS9. For fuzz id say for for the fuzz face, Fulltone 70 or 69, or even the Boss FZ-5 (many people dont like it, but i love the fuzz face tone only) also if you can get your paws on a Roger Mayer Octavia its pretty wicked to!

i would do terrible things for an orange. and tube screamers have great breakup. problem is they sound like the best made deluxe reverb ever through an 8" speaker. they are convincing though, just not for me.

ok, i tried out 3 overdrives today: the bb preamp and the tonebone classic, and the tonebone plexi. the bb preamp will color your tone allot but it is great. it gives a bit of a nice mid boost without being too colored like a TS. there is also allot of bass response. this pedal does not have very much gain but does sound like a tube amp pushed into overdrive. this thing is one hell of a booster too.

the tonebone classic was utterly amazing. it sounded great, and authentic, and dynamic with the drive on one, set to low with the switch, and with no mid boost. then at full gain, with a 12 db mid boost, this thing was singing, sustaining incredibly long yet giving authentic tone. this will give quite a boost, but not as much as the bb preamp. this pedal will color your tone quite a bit and lacks low end very slightly. the most transparent setting was with all mid boost and the treble shaper off, and the filter all the way up(no filter), treble at noon, bass full. then there was no lack of low end. you know that feeling you get when you find a great tone? this was it.

The plexi sucked. i found about two usable sounds out of it. it colors your tone in a crappy way, the mid scoop isnt really scooped at all, and its bassy. with the drive all the way down on the rythm channel, and all the tone controlls at 12, or no flat w/switches it wasnt bad. also on the lead with the mids boosted to oblivion gave a nice lead, but... ####ty pedal. the tube is just a gimmick in this pedal.
