I use an Analogman modded TS 808 and Crowther Hotcake, I set them both with drive low and level all the way up, this helps push my twin reverb into natural overdrive (which is very very loud as I never set it below 6 when playing live). I run the TS 808 for that classic SRV drive sound in blues type solos, I run the hotcake for loud melodic leads as its very transparent but has lots and lots of sustain so it really lets your guitar tone sing, and then I turn them both on together if I need a lot of gain and sustain, the two compliment each other very well. I also run a keeley compressor into both pedals which I use to boost sustain. I really like holding out chord tone notes in solos, and the keeley compressor boosts a lot of the mid and high end harmonics making the tone very rich, it does squash the attack a little though and can kill your dynamics if used in excess.
A good trick for anyone wanting to play their twin loud on stage is to turn it around backwards when you play, that way the brunt of its volume is sent towards the backwall, that way you can drive it and get that great tone without shattering everyones eardrums...quite as much. 😈
