Yeah! I remember the time when I knew nothing about guitar scales. My first decent guitar was an american strat but was so uncomfortable to play for me (I've got small hands) so when I switch to my gibson SG and I couldn't believe how comfortable was for me to play that guitar with a big fat neck which really made no sense at all to me at the time but then I learned about scales and realized why it hurt me using barrel chords. That's a shame 'cause I like strats.
As for a begginer's guitar I'd say something with a fixed bridge, hard tail or a gibson like stop tail, probably a 24.75 " scale (in my opinion a comfortable scale for either a big or small handed person) but I don't really know that much about the prices of cheap guitars so I can't really recomend anyone by name.
