How Did You Learn Guitar.

The most pointless thing in the world though is people who take up guitar to learn popular songs, even worse when they collect the exact same gear as their favorite player.

It really pisses me off me when i tell people i play guitar and they ask 'what songs do you know?' i dont know any songs dumbass i play my own tunes.

Guitar for me is about filling a gap, Id hear stuff like the crow solo or the riffage at the end of desparado (where the three mariachis reunite) and think 'man that'd be so cool if i could play stuff that sounded like that, why can't there be like a secret track on one of my albums thats like that?'

i used to watch mad mikes vids youtube before i got a guitar and think, thats what i want to be like, no structured songs or real band music, just monsterous jamming.

not really, taking lessons does teach you faster and help you learn a more diverese range of stuff but people do say you start to sound like you teacher.

Yeah, if you spend to much time learning from one person, that's all you're going to pick up on.

Guitarists who can play super fast licks going 280 BPM don't really impress me. I could never really relate to fast guitar stuff like that, that punched you in the face y'know?

i absolutely agree. i would rather listen to a 5 year old play an original composition than some hacked up piece of #### cover of the rolling stones. reproducing music is the most worthless thing you can do as a guitar player. period. adding something to a cover is worth doing, but covering a song because you like the tune is one of the ####tiest reasons to do a cover.

i dont agree with that at all travesty. if you like a song whats wrong with learning it and playing because you like it? thats what music is about. if YOU like it.

I know some people can be obsessive, but I'm not ashamed to say I'd like a Mustang almost exactly like Kurt's, as well as a PolyChorus to go with my Small Clone. I'd also like to play my own songs, but I know nothing about writing and can never come up with good lyrics or riffs.

well theres nothing wrong with wanting the same kit as well known player, collecting it to imitate that person is dumb though (come as you are must be the must misunderstood song ever).

I chose a well modified jaguar partly because of the grunge connection and i like to see signiture models on the market, too bad they're overpriced.

I and I beleive Travisty was specifically talking about people who don't play anything but covers, like those really really anal precise cover do-ers on youtube who try to get it exactly like the original.

As cobain called them; 'lame unoriginal juke box heros with stars in their eyes'.

well if he means them, i agree. if he wasnt, look at what i said before. i dont think all covers need to be changed. some are perfect as is, IMO. some are cool with you own original twist. sublime is a perfect example of this. they did so many covers, but i dont think one of them is as the orginal was. everyone was a lot different but everyone still sounded amazing(to me).

well theres nothing wrong with sitting in your room reproducing a song because you like the song and maybe want to test your technique or learn from someone elses technique. the ####ty part comes when you play it to the public, or put it on an album. i think that if your going to consider the cover a piece of artwork or take anycredit for it whatsoever youve got to either have taken it in a new direction or make it better than the original.

i dont do "copy" covers because theres no emotion in them, in addition to the above reasons.

i wasnt talking about the 9 year old jamming in his basement, im talking about the band that only records and plays covers.

well if they ONLY do covers thats ####. no doubt. but i dont find a problem at all if there is a band, whether their big or not, doing a cover that is a carbon copy of the original. yeah, your own additions make it more special but i dont think its a necessary.

im not saying its the most artistic thing oy ucan do, but its paying tribute, like saying theres nothing wrong with this song, its perfect, why would we change it?

you wouldnt. but you wouldnt cover it either. i think paying tribute is including a riff or a lyric from another song, not copying it.

I taught myself but my dad got me started by teaching me how to tune my guitar and stuff like that. He pretty much taught me how to teach myself.

self taught, then a few lessons at school where we used to ask the teacher how to play certain songs and he would show us.

always remember one guy whos tongue was too big for his mouth (poor lad) who just used to ask about the strumming (he could never say it either).

He's not actually talking about copying the song, he means playing it as it is, as the same song. If I covered Heart-Shaped Box for example, I'd play it as I know it, not add parts to it.

Often i find a tab to a song to find out what chords and frets it uses then i start working on re writing it in my own style and i end up with something totally different.

Ive done tools disposition and metalicas welcome home in recent days and i really like how they've come out.
