i hear ya. i play loads on my 3/4 size classical... i think if you learn something on a #### geetar its much easier when you play it on something better

I agree with bandit, I took lessons (still do) but my teacher isnt some stuffy guy in a suit, hes like this 25 year old metal head, I guess it depends on who you get.

Well, I met w/ the Devil 😈 at the crossroads at midnight to sell my soul to become the best guitar player ever, well, it turned out that the Devil 😈 already made that arrangement with a prior client 😢 , as well as other deals w/ other clients for best ever in *insert genre here* 😕 , but he told me he had one genre left, so I took it... Well, it turns out it was the area of non-rhythmic, random noise 🙄 ... So, long story short, I'm awesome at creating utter chaos, but have to actually practice to make anything resembling music... 😆😆😆

Ok, joking aside so far I'm self taught on most everything...

Mostly out of petty jealousy of a friend of mine who started playing guitar when he was about 15 or so. A year or so later I decided to pick it up, but I was somewhat indifferent and couldn't find the motivation/drive to learn. Well, I put the guitar down for maybe 2 years or so and, without the competitive impetus dictating my desire to play, I discovered that I actually really enjoyed it and pursued music theory in college for a few years to understand the instrument (and composition) better, in general. So yeah, it wasn't something that I was crazy about at first, but now I can't go a day without picking it up.

i started off with lessons and thenb taught myself for 5 years and now i have lessons but i dont need them 😁

My first guitar was a BC Rich Warlock 🤮 and my first practice amp was a Crate SS 🤮

Anyway, I was like 11 at the time and would only pick up the guitar only once every few weeks.

I then taught myself to read tabs and mxtabs.net became my best friend for years.

I eventually grew tired of learning covers and started making my own music. Pretty much 10 years in a nut shell...

wow i'm not like the majority of guys here who seem to have self taught themselves. good or bad thing? Although I should say that I'm still learning, but by the use of a teacher and theory books.

TBH, that's the best way. If you can do that and still enjoy, then great. I would have gotten bored at just the thought of it and loose interest pretty quickly. But remember, you can make up your own scales and arpeggiate chords pretty easily. Recently, I've found that my ability to come up with something in my head and put it down on guitar has become much better. I feel this works for me, but theory is definitely the better option if you know it.

I definitely wish I had stuck to lessons and learned more theory, but my priorities were always more dedicated to learning how to physically play the instrument, and sadly, this was something my teacher completely ignored.

I just wanted to make noise and to be able to play man who sold the world! ive been playing 15 years now. still not that good! ha,ha. Nirvana inspired me to pickup the guitar.

I learned with lessons, which feel is the best way to learn. It's just so much easier, you have someone to correct you and you learn LOT of little things that help you on the long run. It's also the best way to get certain technenics (bad grammer) that yours favs use

Took lessons, studied music in school - received a BA in music in 1977.

I taught myself, with the aid of quite a few records of course. I started with bass after hearing Cream's Disrali Gears and seeing the bass physically move my speakers. Then after being perscribed ADD meds, I got interested in the guitar. I learned that by watching TEh KuRDtZzzZ form power chords and getting lost in how the notes interact. Which invariably led me to Riffing and now I can totally out shred any of you while I rock out to A7X. You fags should listen to good music.

I myself love add meds. Did you get lost in how the notes from a power chord interact? Wow, it doesn't take much. You should try something a little more advanced, maybe something with 3 notes!

I am also self taught and i might add my teacher sucked. They all(everyone's favorites) inspired me to write words. The words in turn inspired me to write music, and the guitar was the obvious choice. I am glad i did.
