Is it just me or does anyone else hear get a little tired of the "purist" lecturing on how the Jaguar is a "surf" guitar or a "jazz" guitar and that it is not meant for all those "rock and/or roll" styles?
Geezers, things change and I can assure you that Fender's market intelligence is not keeping reissues of the Jag coming out because of either of the intended genres the guitar was designed for.
While you all may have had a point in 1962, it is rather moot at this point. So much goes into a setup or rig for experimental music and in my opinion the Jaguar and to a lesser extent the Jazzmaster (imoho) are quite adept (if purely by accident) at generating dreamy and otherworldy tones that are very uniue pending on what is in or out of the chain (particularly with reverbs, delays, distortions).
We can thank all the financially poor bands (Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr., MBV) for enlightening a younger generation of players to what is capable with these guitars that stand out of the normal LP/Strat/SG/Tele arena so often associated with the rock genre. If the Jag and Jazz had not been so discarded by the "intended" audience within a decade or 2 of release, these bands could never have found them in pawnshops for a couple of hundred dollars.
One other point of frustration associated with the Jag...Kurt Cobain.
I know you know, but I hate reading reviews of the stock jag by little Nirvana disciples.
What he played was in body style only....he might as well have been playing an SG!
