But anyway, I did want to agree with tremolo's point about frustration with Cobain/surf disciples. For all I know the Strat could have originally meant to play only with Romanian folk music, but we don't hear "purists" arguing that Strats should only be used for this one style of music. And another point--why spend your money buying a guitar to imitate a man who was not a particularly impressive guitar player and whose major contribution to guitar playing seems to be the bright idea to crank up the distortion pedal? I apologize for being so combative, but I'm tired of people ranting on about how Nirvana is so incredible when really they were a good-but-not-great band. At my middle school, everyone goes through two phases: first Nirvana, then Sublime. There's no shame in moving on...
Dude i have had your argument more times! Like on youtube for instance, i got stick off surf players for making a Jaguar sound like hardcore punk, they said stuff like "Sounds awfull, thats not what the guitar was intended for... go buy an Ibanez idiot". Which is quite funny. Considering what Hendrix, Blackmore, Malmsteen, Sambora, etc. have done with Stratocasters. I suppose John 5 is an idiot too for playing Metal on a Telecaster?
Basically, if everyone in this world was as close minded as that minority it would be a sterile place, forget progression or innovation.
Some things are/were accidental and people get mislead. The Jaguar is'nt relevant to Kurts sound, it may as well have been an S.G. But its relevant to the image.
He like a load of other players could not afford a popular Fender so bought the undesirable shortscale models and modified them. J Mascis originally saved his money to go and buy a Strat, but when he got to the store he could only afford a Jazzmaster. He states this in his interview about his signature model.
Sonic Youth was probably the same, but the Jazzmaster is very relevant to thier sound, unlike the Nirvana situation.
I think people should play what they want on whichever guitar they want but also respect design. But ideally they should strive for some sort of originallity.
