It's worth preserving something if it will only grow in value by doing so. The Mona Lisa wouldn't be worth a bajillion dollars if someone came along and touched it up every year or two.
Collectibles are valuable if they are left in as close to original condition as possible.
Case in point: Hendrix guitar burned onstage in Miami, given to Frank Zappa, who restored it to working order. When Zappa died, the guitar was willed to Dweezil Zappa who made further modifications, then tried to sell it for $1million, but was offered well under half that amount.
Which version of that guitar would be most valuable?
a) Hunk of charcoal burned by Hendrix

Probably B, but the point is, if you are given a truly classic car, the first thing you do IS NOT put a sunroof and spoiler on it. You leave it as close to stock as possible.
