Also I always keep my amp on the distortion channel at a VERY low gain setting so that my clean guitar will sound more choppy/crisp I guess you could call it.

in my opinion its the other pedals that he has paired with his distortion that are giving you the clarity you speak of. but with a ehx little big muff or english muff'n you can get similar sounds you just need the gain and volume on the pedal near 0 .the less gain/volume from the pedal less fuzz, but thats just my theory.

He is just using distortion. The track he is playing over is where the other effects are coming from.

I've actually got a cheap 15 watt amp from First Act. I'm gonna take the leads to the speaker and solder them to an input jack, then I'm gonna take a push on, push off switch and put it where the rocker switch was. Throw it in a project box, BAM! Distortion pedal.

transformer will blow fairly quickly, but go for it! to keep the transformer in live, put a resistor equal to the speaker to ground at the output (replacing the speaker) it also needs to have at LEAST as many watts as the thing is rated for, preferably higher (once it distorts, its exceeding its rms rating...)

I'm pretty sure tone is where you find it. I was never all that taken with tubescreamers til I got my visual sound route 808 and I can't stop using it. Rats are amazing and you can't go wrong with one in my opinion. If you're using a small solid state amp perhaps get something likew a blackstar HT-dual which has 2 channels, one of which can be set up for clean: its a great way of getting valve amp sounds at a cheap price. If you only want to practice then maybe like some of the guys said get a low powered tube amp: my cousin just got a blackstar ht-5 1x10 combo this weekend and its blown my socks off: was much louder than the 30w line6 spider he had beforehand too and was only

the title of this thread is an oxymoron to me, when i think of distortion i think of totally overpowered chord sounds with no distinction, and thats why i like it! overdrive is more of that chordlike crispy kind of sound to me.

i recently got a valve amp and it sounds great with its built in drive but then i put the bad monkey on and it gives me loads of harmonics and feedback 😁

I like loading the guitar up to get all these pulsating, floating harmonics behind it and an octave up, so its like bells chiming...

I'm not an idiot, I can tell a good valve sounds when I hear them. The blackstar is a small amp which is why its cheap; it was well constructed and sounded fantastic. The epiphone and peavey valve king amps are the sort of rubbish bits of kit I assume you're talking about. Please read posts before you blindly contradict a point. Sometimes, some people are just wrong.

its got a hybrid preamp, and a solid state power amp. imo, the most important part of a valve amp is the power amp. my bassman gets no preamp distortion on almost all standard pickups for instance. the crunch of amps like the bluesbreaker and ac30 comes from the power amp. play an ac30, with the preamp dimed. slight dirt, but not much. then crank it. big difference. in my opinion, a hybrid amp should have a solid state preamp and a tube power amp...
