custom telecaster idea

If THAT is a Telecaster, why don't we just start calling all Fenders Fenders and get it over with. The only thing Tele about that guitar seems the be the shape of the headstock.

As a fan of Telecasters, I really hate seeing those guitars ☹

I guess you're right on that.

Still, calling it a Telecaster is a bit wrong. Why wouldn't Fender just market it as a new guitar? A Jazzcaster, or something equally as predictible...

I have to admit, however, looking at the setup it does look like a pretty sweet guitar. I just don't see it as a Telecaster

no youre right, theres way to many elements in there to call it a tele, but then my idea is essentially a tele with a different bridge, that just has a tele headstock.

i was talking to my tech today about it and he was saying shimming the neck with a wood wedge would be best, cause you could cut out a shallow cavity for the bridge to sit in but that would be more work.

but then how have those ones got TOM setups?

also, the neck pickup route doesnt fit standard single coils like somone said

oh and also, i'd really like to either move the tail piece of my les paul right to the back or to fit a trapeize tailpiece, but i'd want a really short one, like 3 or 4 inches or less, can you get these or is it possible to modify a longer one?

First off, if you fit a TOM to a Tele, you then need Gibson spaced pickups for it.

I'm sure i've seen Tele's with Floyd Roses, maybe they were custom built by someone else by Fender, i've never even played a Tele so i don't know if it would fit stock, i don't even like the look of them.

Why do you want to move the tailpiece right to the back of the LP? The tailpiece, while holding the ball end of the strings in place also provides the break angle over the bridge, moving the tailpiece back will decrease this angle and will effect your sustain.

well cause i like the look, its more comfy for my hand and i get the third bridge thing, plus sometimes i find the les paul too sustainy and thick with sound.

and its ok, i found the perfect tailpiece.

That was me that said that, but I wasn't 100% sure.

Still, it sounds like you will have a fair bit of routing to do anyway, so a bit more on the neck pup cavity won't hurt 😉

yeah, it'll need a neck shim, some work doing to mount the bridge pickup if i dont use a tele plate and all kinds of stuff if i decide to go ahead with this, not sure i will at the moment.

right now i want to modify my les paul.

My dream at the moment is to build my perfect guitar out of cheap Squier parts, just a bastard guitar using parts from strats, teles, duo-sonics and jagmasters.

This is the dream...

Telecaster neck with maple fretboard. 21 frets.

Jagmaster body, painted bright lemon yellow, and with a white pickguard.

Duo-sonic pickup at the neck, strat pickup in the middle, and jagmaster humbucker at the bridge.

Strat bridge. If it was the true dream guitar, it would have a Mustang bridge and vibrato system, but I'm only talking Squier parts here.

Ideally, I'd also like to have individual pickup selector switches to get seven pickup combinations instead of the usual five.

As for tone/volume pots, not sure. Probably go with the standard volume/tone/tone setup. It is a Squier, after all...

fender telecaster necks wont fit into fender strat bodies. i have no idea about squier though.

now thats quite a mishmash, you're thinking just like i was when i started my jag project almost a year ago. (it worked out quite expensive, but my jag is one of a kind to me and worth all the trouble)

as for my les paul i want:

a short trapeze tailpiece (ordered)

SD JB (bridge)

something SD in the neck, like a 50's PAF

black/white/black pickguard

grover tuners (fitted)

fender strap buttons (fitted)

both lower knobs removing and replacing with 2 way switches for coil splitting/out of phasing

other knobs rewiring for master volume and tone

the pickups are pricy so i'm just going to take the covers off for now

i had the mod done today and its pretty cool, the third bridge really sustains alot, way more than the jag, in fact it hasnt affected the sustain at all.

And it has semi acoustic looks.

The odd thing is i strung it with extra slinkeys which are like .8s on the top and .38's on the bottom and the sound is alot like the fender silver bullets that i have on the jag, in fact it sounds alot like my jag did when i first put them on, all metalic and dingy.

Now in comparision my jag sounds dull.

Is this just because the strings are brand new and always sound really fresh and twangy and they dull out as time goes by but you dont notice?

the only way to compare to guitars is with new strings of the same brand through the same amp.

but 8-38's, whats the matter with you?

i wanted to know what they sounded like and there wasnt much other choice, i like fender silver bullets but they didnt stock them.

ive used regulars, hybrids and heavys, i know i wont like slinkey tops heavy bottoms (i want the opposite) and i dont know about not even slinkeys.

to be honest yeah, they are kind of thin and light sounding

8-38 seems awfully thin, especially for a Jag (if that's what we are talking about). I thought Jags sound better with heavier strings (like 11-52, or even 12-56), and sometimes even with a wound G.

I have Fender Bullet 9-42 on my Telecaster and I like them. Good for bending and light chord work.

I have d-Addario 10-46 on my Jagmaster, and while I prefer the sound of them, they go out of tune easily when I really bend into them.

no these are on the les paul,

i think i'll try something heavier next time i bust a string but i had hybrids on before which were really flat and dull sounding on the lows and really glossy and fine sounding on the highs (they weren't even that old) and these extras have evened it out nicely but i do think they're kinda thin.

i love the metalic bing! sound of silver bullets though.

i feel the opposite, i like the dynamic range of heavy strings which dont buzz at all, even on the low e.

Good point about the buzz!

I have to admit I get a good amount of buzz on my Telecaster (9-42), whereas on my Jagmaster (10-46) there is no buzz at all.

also, electric guitars with little buzz can trick you into thinking there is no buzz at loud levels, as the pickups wont pick it up. (like when i try to play bar chords)
