In Australia there is a retail chain called Cash Converters which are basically a big, franchise pawn shop. There prices can be a bit high on guitars, but they are more than willing to be talked down (my affinity Tele was $200, reduced from $245). Most of the guitars they carry are cheap brands (Cort, J&D, Behringer, Casino, Squire 😉) but sometimes a gem can be found. My Tele and my 51 were both found at Cash Converters.
A funny thing... I was at a Cashies the other week and they had two Squier strats, a Standard and a Bullet. They wanted AUD$225 for the Bullet (brand new they retail for AUD$199) and $125 for the Standard (arctic white, white scratchplate) I was going to buy the standard, but decided to wait and go to another store.
