I'm thinking about getting a jag and was wondering what the difference is between the 'American Vintage

Other than price...the country the guitar is made in. The classics are made in Mexico. American Vintage Re-Issue (AVRI) is American made, obviously. Cheaper quality of product. AVRI's come with Gotoh Tuning Keys, Classics just have Fender Tuning Keys. Pickups are different. There's two Classic Players, one with double humbuckers and regular (two single coils).

AVRIs come with hard shell cases, Classics just come with gig bag.

I don't know of anything else. I've heard nothing, but positive things about the Classic players, for the most part anyway.

I heard the pickups are noisey (hums and what not) and weak, I read a ew reviews awhile back.

If you want the more 'classic' Jaguar sound and can afford the American one, I say go for that. It will have better resale value as well.

I like single coil pick ups way more than humbuckers, but I have not played the "Players" version to properly compare.

classic: tune-o-matic bridge, the tailpiece is closer to the bridge, the circuitry is different. neck on the classic is 9.5 as opposed to 7.25 on the avri. really not classic at all, but a cool guitar none the less.

The AVRI is what it says... a Vintage Reissue. True as can be to the original spec even down to cloth wiring.

The MIM series offer new variations on an old classic with updates to suit modern playing and players.

Based upon this, you have to ask yourself what you intend too play on this guitar and what sounds are you looking for? The hard case and resale factors are irrelevant. You are about to spend a large ammount of money on a guitar that will last you many years to come. So ideally, you need to play both and choose which feels right.

I know, that's why I put it in it's own paragraph, something that's not that important, but a difference none-the-less.

Must be Fender 'cos all the specs I saw on MF I listed.

i think only the hummer one has different wiring though. and you can tell by looking the tailpiece is moved up also

Yeah it is, I never noticed that.

Wonder what difference that'll make.

it used to say on MF i think. its for like increased break angle over the bridge so it adds sustain(supposedly)

Hmm I'd think it'd change the tone of the strings a bit, but I guess that's possible. I'll have to get a guitar shop to order it just so I can see if that's true n just be like, "yeah I don't want it, see you assholes later!"

Kinda like when I bet my friends I can get a free cup of coffee. They doubt me, so I fill out an application, and when I get the interview they ask me if I want anything, I ask for coffee, they get it for me, then i just leave sayin, "thanks for the coffee ####."

haha. yeah i think it changes the tone of the strings with less distance to ring out behind the bridge and such

I don't see how it'd help sustain.

its the break angle over the bridge, normal jags dont have much of an angle going over but it being greater angle will increase tension, therefore sustain

Hmm that's the same reason I see it affecting the sound. Sounds pretty reasonable to me.

I believe it adds sustain, although proving it would be difficult for someone like me.

Gibsons have had that sort of break angle forever, so this is Fender finally giving in and saying "you were right", but i bet they won't do that to another single piece of hardware or design, ever.
